A expansão internacional dos bancos brasileiros: motivações, restrições e perspectivas

Resumo: The globalization of the economy is one of the main driving forces of the internationalization of organizations. This phenomenon has been studied extensively in the academic literature of Management and Economics, generating many studies and explanatory theories. The increased presence of global companies in manufacturing sectors was followed by several theoretical studies that attempted to explain this process. But the same does not occur with the internationalization of the services sector, specifically banking. The international banking activity has increased significantly over the last four decades. This overseas movement is also seen as a defensive strategy, necessary to ensure continuity of business with companies that have foreign subsidiaries. Although there are large Brazilian banks with high rates of profitability, they do not have a significant international presence. Having as the theoretical framework the Internalization, OLI and Uppsala theories we studied the main reasons for the internationalization of the largest Brazilian banks (Banco do Brasil, Itaú-Unibanco and Bradesco), and discussed their presence in international markets. The results show that the main reasons are to follow their multinational clients and to obtain resources to finance local projects.

Este fenômeno tem sido amplamente estudado na literatura acadêmica de Administração e Economia, gerando muitos trabalhos e teorias explicativas. A grande presença global de empresas dos setores de manufatura foi seguida de diversos estudos teóricos que procuraram explicar este processo. Já o mesmo não ocorre na internacionalização do setor de serviços, especificamente serviços bancários. A atividade bancária internacional tem aumentado significativamente nas últimas quatro décadas. Esse deslocamento do banco para o exterior também é visto como uma estratégia defensiva, necessária para assegurar a continuidade dos negócios com as empresas que possuem filiais estrangeiras. Por outro lado, apesar de existirem grandes bancos brasileiros com altas taxas de lucratividade, os mesmos não possuem uma expressiva presença internacional. Tendo como arcabouço teórico as teorias de Internalização, OLI (Paradigma Eclético) e Uppsala, foram estudados os principais motivos da internacionalização dos maiores bancos brasileiros (Banco do Brasil, Itaú-Unibanco e Bradesco), e discutida a sua presença nos mercados internacionais. Os resultados mostram que as principais razões estão relacionadas ao seguimento de seus clientes multinacionais e à obtenção de recursos financeiros para financiamento de projetos locais.Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-08T15:34:59Z (GMT).
