Resumo: This is a theoretical research of philosophical-educational nature, through a bibliographical review which main object is the meaning and role of reading in the process of learning in higher education. Based on the observation that, despite the didactic-pedagogical initiatives that aim the encouragement and qualification of the reading practice at this level of education, its influence on the integral formation of university students remains precarious. Based on empirical diagnoses registered in carried out researches and on theoretical studies on the subject, the paper proposes to reveal that reading, duly understood and practiced in the academic environment, is indispensable mediation for a meaningful formation of university students. Therefore, after a diagnosis of the reading situation in the national university tradition, we will seek to elicit the contribution of it to the university learning, as well as to advance some strategic subsidies for a pedagogy of the reading in higher education, based on the philosophical references concerning the contribution of reading to human formation, particularly those expressed in the thoughts of Freire, Severino and Kleiman.

A partir de la constatación de que, a pesar de las iniciativas didáctico-pedagógicas con vistas al incentivo ya la calificación de la práctica de la lectura en ese nivel de enseñanza, sigue precaria su influencia en la formación integral de los estudiantes universitarios. Con base en diagnósticos empíricos, constantes en investigaciones ya realizadas, y en estudios teóricos sobre la temática, el trabajo propone revelar que la lectura, debidamente entendida y practicada en el ambiente académico, es mediación indispensable para una formación significativa de los estudiantes universitarios. Para ello, tras el diagnóstico de la situación de la lectura en la tradición universitaria nacional, se buscará explicitar, con base en las referencias filosóficas sobre la contribución de la lectura a la formación humana, particularmente aquellas expresadas en los pensamientos de Freire, Severino y Kleiman, en el aprendizaje universitario así como avanzar algunos subsidios estratégicos para una pedagogía de la lectura en la enseñanza superior.Trata-se de pesquisa teórica, de cunho filosófico-educacional, mediante revisão bibliográfica que tem por objeto o sentido e o papel da leitura no processo da aprendizagem no curso superior. Partindo da constatação de que, apesar das iniciativas didático-pedagógicas com vistas ao incentivo e à qualificação da prática da leitura nesse nível de ensino, continua precária a sua influência na formação integral dos estudantes universitários. Com base em diagnósticos empíricos, constantes em pesquisas já realizadas, e em estudos teóricos sobre a temática, o trabalho propõe revelar que a leitura, devidamente entendida e praticada no ambiente acadêmico, é mediação indispensável para uma formação significativa dos estudantes universitários.
