Innovation has been pointed out as one of the most powerful sources of economic and social growth of countries and a strategic factor for increasing the competitiveness of firms. Advanced and emerging countries have used policies aimed at stimulating innovation, valuing scientific and technological knowledge, and influencing firms to adopt competitive strategies associated with innovation. Public policies aimed at stimulating innovation in firms have been debated in the academic environment, and understandings about the role of the State and the responsibilities of firms have been diversified. Thus, we tried to answer the following question: What is the effect of government support for innovation in the Brazilian manufacturing industry? Most specifically, the objective of this study is to analyze the effect of government support for innovation, characterizing government support programs for innovation in the Brazilian manufacturing industry. Through a mixed, descriptive and exploratory study, the data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling technique, and the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method in the SmartPLS software, and complementary tests were performed in the SPSS software using the method of Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). The sample was extracted from data of Innovation Survey conducted by IBGE (Pintec). The results indicate that government support is relevant to innovation’s development and there is a need to prioritize government investments that contribute to increase new products for the world market. Likewise, some government public policies support did not indicate relevance in innovation, nor they have any significance in the government's own support, such as public procurement and economic subsidy. Finally, it is hoped that this study will contribute to increasing knowledge about the public instruments of support to innovation that present potential results in innovative performance of Brazilian industry.
