The theme of governance in projects has attracted researchers to studies regarding its use and applicability. A growing consensus agrees that proper governance is crucial to ensuring the effectiveness of projects and project-based organizations. In this context, project governance is seen as the system through which an organization controls, directs and guides the project towards its objectives. In addition to the study of Governance, we also study the types of governance in projects, their use in traditional and agile projects, observing whether the governance processes and tools in existing projects are effective in delivering value to the customer. We approach a framework for governance in projects, in which it was found that the dimensions of “role” and “decision making” are independent of project governance in increasing project performance in relation to its objectives. This study aims to investigate the impact of project governance on project performance. To achieve these objectives, a survey was carried out with individuals involved in projects, with data analyzed using structural equation modeling and linear regression for conditional effects. The results suggest that the greater the governance of projects, the greater the performance of projects. This represents both a relevant theoretical finding, when evaluating governance impacts on projects, and practical ones, when signaling to practitioners that efficiency and control procedures in projects can contribute, as a result, to project performance.
