Resumo: The aim of this study was to evaluate the speed of space closure in canine retraction submitted to two distinct types of elastomeric chains (Memory chain and Standard chain) and to determine: mean quantity of movement of upper canine retraction and the loss of anchorage involved. The sample consisted of 15 patients with Angle 1st division Class II malocclusion, with a mean age of 17, 5 years of 4 boys and 11 girls. All of them were submitted to first premolar extractions. Upper canine retraction was achieved with Standard elastomeric chains in the upper right quadrant and with Memory elastomeric chains in the upper left quadrant providing a starting force of 150 g. Canine retraction was assessed in a three week reactivation protocol, until canine retraction was completed or up to a maximum of 3 reactivations. At each recall, stone model casts were taken. The evaluation of the mean amount of space closure was accomplished in 4 different places (3 between canine-premolar and 1 between caninemolar) and anchorage loss measured between first permanent molar and medial point of third palatal rugae in stone model casts. Results showed a statistical difference towards Memory chain, at one measure point and between the first and second activations. Anchorage loss occurred in both specified retraction methods, however there was not significant difference between them.

Made available in DSpace on 2011-12-27T14:14:07Z (GMT).
