Resumo: This is an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study that used the methodological framework of Grounded Theory. The objective was to understand the main aspects related to crack consumption, dependence, seeking and abandoning treatment from the perspective of crack users in a CAPS ADIII. Thirteen crack users who spontaneously sought treatment at a CAPS AD III participated in the study. Data collection was performed in the unit itself, with an instrument built to conduct semi-structured interviews. The systematic process of data analysis allowed the construction of seven categories: 1) Describing the experiences of the beginning of crack use; 2) “Kissed the can is over!”: The power of the drug; 3) Family breakdown and the use of crack; 4) Crack accompanied by other drugs; 5) Realizing the effects and consequences generated by crack abuse; 6) Associating the power of addiction with the devil and clinging to the faith to be free; 7) The search and abandonment of treatment at CAPS AD. The use of crack, the consequences and the search for treatment is a conditional / consequential process. Evidence that the phenomenon of crack abuse has been entangled with social problems, the context of life and crime. There is no sequence of beginning, middle and end, in which the first contact with crack is the beginning and treatment the end, there is a relationship and interaction between all situations. In many reports, the beginning of consumption was driven by living with the scenes of crack use, or by family breakdown. Coping with addiction is challenging and complex, because it is an easily accessible substance that causes rapid and intense addiction. The consequences related to addiction, such as personal degradation, family breakdown, social isolation, discrimination, prejudice and involvement with crime, show how important it is to prevent consumption and care for dependents. Among the barriers pointed out by the participants to the process of seeking and staying in treatment are: the shame of their self-image, easy access to drugs and emotional issues. It is noteworthy that the participants pointed out aspects that can increase the effectiveness of the treatment in the CAPS AD, which are: follow-up after the completion of the treatment, the offer of professional workshops and the implementation of reception units to serve those who are on the street . It is worth mentioning how much the interviewees felt valued when participating in this research, they also showed an enormous desire to abandon the situation of dependence and to resume life plans

It is worth mentioning how much the interviewees felt valued when participating in this research, they also showed an enormous desire to abandon the situation of dependence and to resume life plansTrata-se de um estudo descritivo, exploratório, qualitativo que utilizou o referencial metodológico da Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados.
