Resumo: The research developed in this thesis sought to analyse the violent deaths and the sense of faith for those who stay. The central objective is to describe the role of religion as a provider of meaning to the families of victims of violent deaths. The theme responds urgently to the Brazilian scenario that has been marked, terribly, by the exacerbated violence. From the year 2008 to the year 2018, about one million Brazilian lives were brutally reaped. In order to verify this reality, Goiânia and its main surrounding cities were part of the field research. It happened through semistructured interviews, carried out with relatives of victims of homicides, suicides and ground transport accidents. The empirical investigations were carried out from January to May 2018, at the Medico-Legal Institute. In the course of the analysis, as a result of interviews, data and theoretical contributions, it has been shown that violent deaths meet the most fragile part of Brazilian society more cruelly: the young black, pardos and poor of the periphery, the women and minorities. The numbers related to violent deaths are very worrisome, since they are avoidable deaths. In this context, the religion plays a fundamental role as a source of meaning, stability and support. Especially when the person is forced to face one of humanity's greatest fears: death. Except when death is taken as a media spectacle, or theme of childish fun, both extremely superficial, the subject death is considered a great taboo, in postmodernity. Even religious leaders - most of the time, shy away from exposing and debating this issue in more depth. Even so, in dealing with the world's greatest pain, suffering and despair at the violent death of their loved one, religion and its efficient symbolic mechanisms are the most powerful structures to combat the brutality of death, the insecurities, fears, the deep sense of emptiness, and especially, to give meaning to a future life without the physical presence of the beloved one.

O objetivo central constitui em descrever o papel da religião como fornecedora de sentido para os familiares das vítimas de mortes violentas. A temática responde urgentemente ao cenário brasileiro que tem sido marcado, terrivelmente, pela violência exacerbada. Do ano de 2008 ao ano de 2018, cerca de um milhão de vidas brasileiras foram ceifadas brutalmente. Na intenção de verificar essa realidade, Goiânia e as suas principais cidades circunvizinhas fizeram parte da pesquisa de campo. A mesma aconteceu por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, realizadas com familiares de vítimas de homicídios, suicídios e acidentes de transportes terrestres. As investigações empíricas se processaram no período de janeiro a maio de 2018, no Instituto Médico Legal. No transcorrer das análises, fruto das entrevistas, dos dados e dos aportes teóricos, se demonstrou que as mortes violentas atingem de forma mais cruel a parcela mais fragilizada da sociedade brasileira: os jovens pretos, pardos e pobres da periferia, as mulheres e as minorias. Os números relacionados às mortes violentas são muito preocupantes, pois se trata de mortes evitáveis. Nesse contexto, a religião desempenha um papel fundamental como atribuidora de sentido, fonte de estabilidade e segurança. Principalmente quando o sujeito se vê obrigado a enfrentar um dos maiores medos da humanidade: a morte. A não ser quando a morte é tomada como espetáculo midiático, ou tema de diversão infantil, ambas extremamente superficiais, o tema morte é considerado um grande tabu, na pós-modernidade. Até mesmo os líderes religiosos – na maioria das vezes, evitam expor e debater este assunto de forma mais aprofundada.
