Resumo: The present study aims to: identify and analyze the meaning of Student Assistance for undergraduate students of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Tocantins (IFTO), during emergency remote education as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, from the perspective of permanence in higher education. From the methodological point of view, this is a research of a quantitative-qualitative nature, covering documentary research, bibliographic research and field research. The latter had as significant subjects undergraduate students of the IFTO, using as instrumental an online form. The studies have apprehending that the correlation of forces within capitalist society and the way in which the student assistance policy has gained materiality in different particularities constituted a movement of (im)permanence in higher education institutions, given the objective conditions that students experience. There are urgent constant struggles and demands on the part of different subjects to guarantee the conditions of permanence of undergraduate students in the public, secular, free and socially referenced university ¿ as a right of citizenship

Do ponto de vista metodológico, trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza quanti-qualitativa, abrangendo a pesquisa documental, a pesquisa bibliográfica e a pesquisa de campo. Esta última teve como sujeitos significativos discentes de graduação do IFTO, utilizando como instrumental um formulário online. Os estudos apreenderam que a correlação de forças no interior da sociedade capitalista e a forma como a política de assistência estudantil ganhou materialidade em diferentes particularidades constituiu um movimento de (im)permanência nas Instituições de Ensino Superior, dada as condições objetivas que os/as discentes vivenciam.
