Resumo: The finality of this dissertation was to investigate the functions, images and significates of Exu in the umbanda religion. The developing of this theme demonstrate that his significations works in one elevated level, that shows the sistematization of the umbanda s theology and doctrine in his more importants streams of religious thinking. From this point of view, one comparative model of the Exu s image in his African origins and his transformations in the Brazilian ground was maked, searching the sincretism and sistematization of this theology and doctrine, in the level iconographic and functional.

Ao aprofundar no tema, mais do que apenas um caso isolado dentro da religião umbandista, o mesmo se transformou no exemplo de como estas ressignificações operam em um nível mais elevado: o das sistematizações da teologia e doutrina de umbanda expressas em suas principais correntes de pensamento. A partir de então estabeleceu-se um modelo comparativo da figura de Exu em suas origens na África e suas transformações em solo brasileiro, principalmente no que tange a umbanda.
