Resumo: The following study aims to show the historical process that took place in Porto Nacional when the Lajeado hydroelectric scheme was implanted on the River Tocantins. The meaning for the habitants of Porto Nacional of the changes on the cultural heritage which resulted from this “development project”. I also aim to discuss, from this reality, the meaning of modernity and tradition in the context of social life. The research was carried out in July 2003, with interviews of testimonies about this event which involved the inhabitants of Porto Nacional. In the bibliography, I gave preference to authors of anthropology who discuss “large-scale development projects”, identity, memory and cultural heritage. And in sociology, those authors who deal with tradition and modernity. I conclude, raising some suggestions for the management of cultural heritage, in the specific process of Porto Nacional.

O que significou para os portuenses as mudanças no patrimônio cultural decorrentes desse “projeto de desenvolvimento”. Também procuro a partir dessa realidade discutir o sentido de modernidade e tradição no contexto da vida social. A pesquisa foi realizada no mês de julho de 2003, com entrevistas de depoimentos sobre esse evento que envolveu os portuenses. Na bibliografia priorizei autores da antropologia que discutem sobre os “grandes projetos”, a identidade, a memória e o patrimônio cultural. E na sociologia aqueles que tratam da tradição e modernidade.
