The infectious spread of a new coronavirus (COVID-19) confronted the health area with its limitations and deficiencies. Forced her to respond massively. In addition to the overcrowding of existing hospitals, countless hospitals were quickly created seeking to support patients who needed specialized care. Soon, the situation began to threaten the health professionals in the field on a personal level: increased workload, fear of their and of their own family contamination. The objective of this research was to describe the impact on health professionals working with patients in isolation due to COVID-19. Nine health professionals participated in this research, including Psychology (2), Medicine (3), Nursing (3), and Technician in Nursing (1), with virtual semi-structured interviews. These data were compared with extracts from the author's experience, who also worked on the front line. To arrive at the results, the Grounded Theory Analysis methodology was used to build a model that represented the perspective of people who experienced the studied phenomenon, and autoethnography to integrate the author's experience. The configuration of the health area in which the pandemic arrived was characterized by the struggle of professionals, to produce the necessary care for patients and, on the other hand, the lack of resources, training, and labor guarantees. Triggers for suffering included facing the unknown, feeling the pain of patients and family, overload, and lack of recognition. The professionals' perception was characterized by the experience of full catastrophe, feelings of insignificance, revolt, and shock. Professionals faced this scenario by managing emotions, mobilizing values, breaking rules, and using their feelings. Added to this was the experience of companionship in the team as a protective factor. The repercussions were, in many moments, demotivation, but also professional and personal growth and some institutional changes for the better. Despite the fatalities and difficulties caused by COVID-19, the repercussions of working on the front lines also showed that professionals were filled with positive feelings, such as the ability to empathize with patients' fears and admire the struggle they were facing
