Resumo: Among chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main causes of death. It is currently possible to use biomarkers to stratify cardiovascular risk and prognosis of these CVDs. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and the Augmentation index (Alx) can be used to assess arterial stiffness. Down syndrome (DS) can be conceptualized as a genetic variation characterized by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 in cells, generating a series of specific characteristics. This research aims to evaluate the values of peripheral (pBP) and central blood pressure (cBP) and arterial stiffness in people with DS. The influence of sex and excess weight on blood pressure (BP) and central hemodynamic values will also be evaluated, as well as whether there is a correlation between central and peripheral systolic BP, PWV and AIx with age and body mass index (BMI). This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 49 people with DS, enrolled in reference institutions in Goiânia and Anápolis, aged between 18 and 59 years old, of both sexes, with authorization from their guardian and verbal consent from the participant. A questionnaire was used to select participants. Anthropometric variables were measured on a scale with a stadiometer and hemodynamic variables were measured using the Dyna-Mapa AOP. The data were entered into a form in Epidata and analyzed with Stata, version 14.0. The Shapiro-Wilk test was applied to verify normality. The t test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for comparisons. Correlations were performed using the Spearman test and classified as weak, moderate, strong and very strong. A p value <0.05 was adopted for all analyses. The peripheral BP values of people with DS were classified as excellent and those of central BP and PWV are below those of the population without DS and without cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) classified by age group, demonstrating that there is no accelerated cardiovascular aging in the population with DS. AIx values were similar to the typical female population of the same age group and without CVRF. Men had higher BP, both central and peripheral, than women. Peripheral blood pressure and central hemodynamic values in the overweight and non-overweight groups were not significant. Peripheral systolic BP and central systolic BP were correlated with BMI and PWV with age.

Peripheral systolic BP and central systolic BP were correlated with BMI and PWV with age. Submitted by anapaula Dias (anapaula@pucgoias.edu.br) on 2025-08-07T17:24:36Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Antônio Wilson Porto Júnior.pdf: 3240687 bytes, checksum: 387a6d11e5279bb6f8880e3fd0714c4f (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2025-08-07T17:24:36Z (GMT).
