In Brazil, where racism is still treated as a taboo, little space is given to the study of racist discourse, and even less to anti-racist discourse. On the one hand, the mainstream media exhaustively exploits episodes of racial violence as a source of outrage; on the other hand, it sometimes does so in a toned-down way due to editorial commitments and interests, producing narratives that end up transforming the victims of this scourge into objects. In this game of politeness between editors and readers, euphemism and its more complex variation, dysphemism – understood, according to Crespo-Fernández and Allan and Burridge, as a hybrid linguistic process that combines elements of softening (euphemism) with depreciative or ironic intentions (dysphemism) – functions as a form of discursive manipulation of the referent. The aim is to understand the functioning of dysphemism in opinion articles, extracted from the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo, about the murder of João Alberto Silveira Freitas – a Black man whose life was brutally taken in a supermarket in 2020, in Rio Grande do Sul. The study is based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Critical Discourse Analysis and Systemic-Functional Linguistics. The results indicate that the combination of linguistic choices (euphemism/dysphemism) present in the article “Antirracismo de sofá”, published in Folha de S. Paulo, gives rise to a highly persuasive and ideologically engaged text in the anti-racist struggle, challenging hegemonic representations, some of which aim to denounce the attempt to blame João Alberto for his own murder. In the article "Uma sociedade à beira de alguma coisa", published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, linguistic choices serve as a trigger to address the many absurdities of the Bolsonaro government, partially marginalizing the topic and proving that part of the media treats racism superficially
