Resumo: The centrality of images in contemporary times and the power relations around them, the image as cognitive mediation, the expansion and democratization of its forms of production impact the construction of audiovisual materialities. Among them, the documentary: there is a growing universe of independent practices, forged by different production and diffusion processes, use of digital technologies and specific relations with politics, social struggles and engagements. In this context, young people in the city of São Paulo, mainly from subalternized and / or historically criminalized sectors, appropriate documentary practices as strategies for visibility, resistance and reexistence. The initial premises of the research – young people as subjects of rights who fight for the construction of citizenships, whose political practices also occur through the path of culture and are crossed by the intersection between images and digital cultures – unfolded in the two case studies that compose this work: the production and circulation of the Brazilian documentaries Schools in Fight (2017) and Outskirts Visionaries (2018). Based mainly on the ethnography of the exhibition circuits of these two films, this work addresses the social and symbolic dynamics built by the young people involved in these processes, who besides acting in the production, actively participated in the circulation, in conversations and debates with the audience after the sessions. The narratives constructed on the screens are updated and gain other dimensions in the melee in the territories. We sought to understand how young people appropriate the political power of documentary to organize the world according to their views; signify and reframe experiences; produce agencies on artistic practices and on the relationships between different social sectors; multiply reports of life and the meanings of their experiences in the community in which they are inserted and outside. The work paths show how these young people strengthen, through culture and through gaps, material and subjective complaints and claims, such as access to financial resources and public policies, the right to racial justice, gender equality, and mental health. When narrating stories and experiences through the mediation of the documentary, these young people – inserted in contexts of violence, inequalities and juvenile extermination – recreate the idea of hope as an active posture to “postpone the end of the world”. The theoretical-methodological approach is qualitative: film analysis, in-depth interviews, ethnographic observations and experience reports prioritize youth narratives and compose different analytical dimensions. The relationship between culture and politics is transversal to the reflections presented in this work, having British Cultural Studies and its Latin American reverberations as a backdrop, as well as references from the fields of Communication and Anthropology, focusing on youth

The relationship between culture and politics is transversal to the reflections presented in this work, having British Cultural Studies and its Latin American reverberations as a backdrop, as well as references from the fields of Communication and Anthropology, focusing on youthA centralidade das imagens na contemporaneidade e as relações de poder em torno delas, a imagem como mediação cognitiva, a ampliação e democratização de suas formas de produção impactam a construção de materialidades audiovisuais. Entre elas, o documentário: há um universo crescente de práticas independentes, forjadas por diferentes processos de produção e difusão, uso de tecnologias digitais e relações específicas com a política, as lutas sociais e os engajamentos. Nesse contexto, jovens na cidade de São Paulo, principalmente de setores subalternizados e/ou historicamente criminalizados, apropriam-se das práticas de documentário como estratégias de visibilidade, resistência e reexistência. As premissas iniciais da pesquisa – jovens como sujeitos de direitos que lutam por dignidade, cujas práticas políticas se dão também pela via da cultura e são atravessadas pela intersecção entre imagens e culturas digitais – desdobraram-se nos dois estudos de caso que compõem este trabalho: a produção e a circulação dos documentários brasileiros Escolas em Luta (2017) e Visionários da Quebrada (2018). Com base principalmente na etnografia dos circuitos de exibição desses dois filmes, abordam-se as dinâmicas sociais e simbólicas construídas pelos jovens envolvidos nesses processos, que, além de atuarem na produção, participaram ativamente da circulação, em conversas e debates com o público após as sessões. As narrativas construídas nas telas atualizam-se e ganham outras dimensões no corpo a corpo nos territórios. Buscou-se compreender de que forma os jovens se apropriam do poder político do documentário para organizar o mundo de acordo com suas visões; significar e ressignificar experiências; incidir nas formas do fazer artístico e nas relações entre diferentes setores sociais; multiplicar relatos de vida e dos sentidos de suas vivências na comunidade em que estão inseridos e fora dela. Os percursos do trabalho mostram como esses jovens fortalecem, pela via da cultura e pelas brechas, denúncias e reivindicações materiais e subjetivas, como acesso a recursos financeiros e a políticas públicas, direito à justiça racial, à igualdade de gênero, à saúde mental. Ao narrar histórias e experiências pela mediação do documentário, esses jovens – inseridos em contextos de violências, desigualdades e juvenicídios – recriam a ideia de esperança como postura ativa para “adiar o fim do mundo”. A abordagem teórico-metodológica é qualitativa: análises fílmicas, entrevistas em profundidade, observações etnográficas e relatos de experiência priorizam as narrativas juvenis e compõem diferentes dimensões analíticas. A relação entre cultura e política é transversal às reflexões que ora se apresentam, tendo como pano de fundo os Estudos Culturais Britânicos e suas reverberações latino-americanas assim como referências dos campos da Comunicação e da Antropologia, com foco em juventudesCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/53848/Livia%20Chede%20Almendary.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Ciências SociaisPUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Ciências SociaisCinema e juventudeDocumentário (Cinema)Políticas de visibilidadeMotion-pictures and youthDocumentary filmsVisibility policiesCNPQ::CIENCIAS SOCIAIS APLICADASCinema para adiar o fim do mundo: juventudes e práticas de documentário em São Pauloinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTLivia Chede Almendary.pdf.txtLivia Chede Almendary.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain449162https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/23680/4/Livia%20Chede%20Almendary.pdf.txtfe881df6db4e5617e316e59885846b48MD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
