This paper analyzes the photographic images produced during the current Ukrainian War that were disseminated on the Instagram social network of the independent Ukrainian newspaper Donbas Frontliner, which covered the entire conflict and continues to be active. In addition, a historical review of war images was carried out, which began in paintings and are now present in our hands through cell phones. War is part of the imagination of the Brazilian population through the images we receive every day of ongoing conflicts, in addition to the imagination created from old illustrations of conflicts, both journalistic and artistic. With advances in technology, we receive war photographs more quickly and without much investigation through social networks. The objective of this paper is to analyze and discuss war photographs in digital environments, how they are transmitted and received, and to address the impacts of these images on the creation of imaginary environments of war in the connections made on digital networks. To develop a concept of image and media, authors Aby Warburg (1866–1929) are introduced with the “Formula of Passion” to discuss the way war images impact society; Vilém Flusser (1920–1991) and journalist Harry Pross (1923–2010), who bring important thoughts to understand human communication. To understand more about the production of war images, Ukrainian journalist Andriy Dubchak, who created the newspaper Donbas Frontliner, was interviewed. Based on the interview, analysis and theoretical review, it is possible to understand that war environments are complex compared to what is seen on social media. A concept of shocking images was also discussed, which are produced precisely with the role of drawing attention to the conflict. In this sense, it was observed that photographs are subject to a process of resignification that begins with the photographer and acquires new nuances and interpretations with each new viewer or individual exposed to one or a set of war photographs. From the images, an online war environment is created
