Resumo: | This thesis presents a study over the significance of public school for the child. It sought to bring to the center of the debate the child as the main subject of education. Assuming that the speach of the subject is significant, the research process was conducted through interviews with children attending public school in Erechim - RS. Using a qualitative approach as methodology for the investigation, this research sought to "listen" to children in order to understand the meaning that school has for them and how this meaning is related to the process of teaching and learning. The theoretical foundation of the study was based on the knowledge of the child‟s history - the understanding of their trajectories- and also, the history of education and schooling in Brazil. Taking into consideration these references, the analysis attempts to put in vogue the discourses of children so that through their lines it is possible to know and understand the different meanings they give to the school and learning process. The results showed that listening to the subject is crucial to assure a quality teaching and learning process and also is essential to the formation of the subject. This formation cannot be subdivided because it belongs to a universe of environments and situations pertaining to social and human condition. Knowing and understanding the meanings intrinsic to child‟s speech represents an ability to prioritize education as a wide and continuous process towards the formation of the subject as a whole, building an egalitarian society |

Procurou trazer para o centro do debate a questão da criança como sujeito central da educação. Partindo do princípio de que a palavra dos sujeitos é significativa, o processo de investigação deu-se através de entrevistas realizadas com crianças que freqüentam a escola pública no município de Erechim RS. Utilizando, para a investigação, uma abordagem qualitativa procurou escutar as crianças, a fim de compreender o significado que a escola tem para elas e como relacionam esses significados com o processo de ensino e aprendizagem. O embasamento do estudo deu-se a partir do conhecimento da história da criança na sociedade ocidental e brasileira e, também da história da educação e da escolarização no Brasil. Apropriando-se desses referenciais a análise procurou colocar em relevo os discursos das crianças, para através de suas falas conhecer e compreender os diferentes significados que atribuem à escola e ao processo de aprendizagem. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que ouvir os sujeitos é fundamental para construir um processo de ensino e aprendizagem de qualidade, que valorize a formação do sujeito, que se constitui em uma totalidade, que pertence a um universo de condições e situações sociais e humanas peculiares.
