The present work has as its central axis to study of foreign relations of the Brazilian Empire during the period 1870-1889, with the primary intention to grasp the general meaning of foreign policy in the last decades of the monarchic period. The objective will be to discuss and try to put to the test analysis of foreign policy of the period and assess whether the Distension and Universalism would have been, in fact, the main thrusts of activity outside in the decades leading up to the overthrow of the monarchy. The study of this period of dramatic and conclusive trajectory national intends to contribute with historical studies of international relations in Brazil, enabling a better understanding of Brazilian Foreign Policy of the Imperial period and fill in the large gap in studies of external action concerning the last years of the Empire Dollars. The explanation for this is that reality became common to look at the erosion process of the Brazilian monarchy as being ruled by supremacy of the home affairs on international issues. All institutional and political crisis of the last years of the reign of D. Pedro II seemed to support that theory, especially the unfolding of events that culminated on November 15, 1889, with the proclamation of the Republic. Despite this preponderance of the domestic sphere, the period is rich in elementary aspects of the historical constitution of the foreign policy of Brazil. Therein are presented processes that act as major catalysts of internal movements, especially in systemic and multiple relations of power, which stemmed in certain peculiarities in the implementation and understanding of the national interest
