Resumo: This thesis was developed taking into perspective a methodic view of Religious Sciences, especially History, Anthropology and Sociology. It seeks to present the most relevant aspects of the Contestado War, considering the mystical prophetic message from Saint João Maria and the role of youth leaderships. The Contestado, led largely by young people, has produced a mystical which translates itself into a kind of cultural identity of that region‟s people. This mystique has in João Maria, still considered holy and prophet, a central reference. Through it, that portion of the youth that had been raped and silenced little by little throughout the generations, return to dream of a society freed from different forms of oppression and exclusion to now seek for new alternatives related to their daily routine and society. This is how young catarinenses try to keep the Contestado‟s memory alive. That is why many youthful experiences catarinenses seek to keep alive the memory of the Contestado. In general, its different forms of organization and mobilization present three characteristics, among which this thesis has been developed: certain reference to Contestado, a significant mystic and religiosity, usually founded in Christian values and principles, and the idea of a perfect place directly connected to the daily routine and habits of a self transforming society existent in the past and present. The major hypothesis is that religiosity is not the necessarily same as alienation, and that the mystic of Contestado is a meaningful reference of resistance, hope and search for alternatives for today‟s Catarinense youth. The research combines bibliographic and empirical concepts. It contemplates a bibliographic review that analyzes the academic evolution of Contestado, which contains categories such as: youth , mystic , religious experience , public culture , cultural redefinition and heritage . The thesis had abundant material derived from researchs and observation of events pastoral sociocultural and youth, and also interviewed 14 young people and advisers youth organizations, the popular-democracy camp in Santa Catarina. Among the given results, it was noted that: First, the young people who participated in the war of Contestado, as well as their descendants, do not abandon religiosity or mystic when engaged on a revolutionary view or when playing roles as protagonists of social changes. Instead, they take advantage of them to better their practices. Second: that the Contestado, mostly led by young people, produced its own mystic, that is had as that area‟s own cultural identity. It was an eminent religious movement, and it is until today‟s date, a major reference to many young people that resist the current process of neoliberal globalization, and are engaged in developing a different world. In summary, it is noted that the many experiences of young Catarinenses have kept the Contestado memory alive

In summary, it is noted that the many experiences of young Catarinenses have kept the Contestado memory aliveEsta tese foi desenvolvida na perspectiva metodológica das Ciências da Religião e contempla vários olhares, especialmente o da História, o da Antropologia e o da Sociologia. A pesquisa realizada teve caráter misto bibliográfico-empírico.
