Resumo: This research aims to analyze the referential process in retellings of fables produced by students of elementary school, with the theoretical foundation based on text studies in the field of Textual Linguistics. This study assumes as theoretical assumptions that the text is composed of linguistic, cognitive, social and interactional elements; the referents are built in the speech by the subjects involved in the interactional process; the coherence is the result of an activity performed by the subject, taking as starting point the linguistic components, but not limiting to them. A corpus composed of twenty two written retellings of a fable was selected considering the objective of this research. The corpus was analyzed according to its way of formation and maintenance. The results indicate that in retellings students introduce the referents and maintain them through different strategies that ensure the referential progression and the text coherence

Assume-se como pressupostos teóricos que o texto é composto por elementos linguísticos, cognitivos, sociais e interacionais; os referentes são construídos no e pelo discurso pelos sujeitos envolvidos no processo interacional; a coerência é resultado de uma atividade realizada pelo sujeito tendo como ponto de partida o componente linguístico, mas não se limitando a ele. Considerando o objetivo da pesquisa, foi selecionado um corpus composto por vinte e dois recontos escritos de uma fábula e analisado o modo de constituição e de manutenção de referentes nesses recontos.
