Resumo: This dissertation analyzes the transformations, ruptures, and continuities of Jorge Amado’s political-literary project during the 1930s and 1940s, focusing on two of his novels: Cacau (1933) and Terras do Sem Fim (1943), which inaugurate the so-called “cocoa cycle” in his literature. Over the course of ten years, amid profound changes in Brazil and the world, the author — himself also undergoing transformation — reworked the universe of cocoa, shifting from a proposal of a Brazilian proletarian novel to the construction of the concept of ser grapiúna, an identity category that came to stand as a social representation of the southern Bahia region, even while preserving its polysemy to this day. Literature is here understood in its dialectical dimension, as both a reflection and a critique of reality, as well as a means of social intervention, enabling the alignment of political and literary practice. The study also highlights the relationship between Terras do Sem Fim and Doña Bárbara (1940), by the Venezuelan writer Rómulo Gallegos, indicating Amado’s dialogue with the tradition of the romance de la tierra and with Latin American intellectual circles

Ao longo de dez anos, em meio a intensas transformações no Brasil e no mundo, o autor — também em transformação — reelabora o universo do cacau, deslocando-se de uma proposta de romance proletário brasileiro para a construção do conceito de ser grapiúna, categoria identitária que se firmaria como representação social da região sul-baiana, ainda que conservando sua polissemia até os dias de hoje. A literatura é aqui compreendida em sua dimensão dialética, como reflexo e reflexão da realidade, e como possibilidade de intervenção no social, permitindo o alinhamento do fazer político e literário.
