Health residency programs consist of lato sensu postgraduate education. Medical Residency was regulated by Decree No. 80,281 in 1977, and Multiprofessional Health Residency was legally established by Law No. 11,129 in 2005. In both programs, the teaching-learning process occurs in the service environment. University hospitals are part of the educational landscape in our country, and the exchanges that happen at the bedside can either facilitate or hinder the demystification of human finitude. It is the role of the preceptor to guide the process of learning-teaching at work, to problematize reality, and to provoke in the resident a process of action and reflection for the reconstruction of their daily practice. The research proposed in this project sought to understand the meanings attributed to the teaching of death and mourning in medical and multiprofessional residencies by preceptors in university hospitals. For this work, a qualitative research approach was chosen. Information was collected through online semi-structured interviews and the application of a self-administered questionnaire. The methodology of thematic analysis was selected for the interpretation and understanding of the collected information. The research adopted the perspective of education as a practice of freedom, presented by Paulo Freire, and the Dual Process Model of Grief, described by Margareth Stroebe and Henk Schut. The results indicate that none of the participants feel prepared to transmit this knowledge and supervise the residents in tasks involving deaths, as they did not receive this content during their Postgraduate or Undergraduate studies.
