Resumo: This research aims to discuss the potential of children’s literature to address themes considered sensitive or taboo – referred to in the field of literary studies as fracturing (Oliveira-Iguma, 2022). The study inquires into how a children’s book can contribute to the reader’s engagement with these topics, as well as the potential of the picturebook to approach them inferentially and poetically. To this end, the literary techniques found in two works by Mia Couto that deal with fracturing themes – O gato e o escuro (2022) and O menino no sapatinho (2014) – were analyzed. The research began with a definition of the term fracturing and a brief overview of subjects considered taboo in children’s books. It then moved on to contextualize Mia Couto’s writing and his poetic project, which involves the colonial and postcolonial reality of Mozambique. Finally, an in-depth analysis of both text and images in the two selected children’s books was conducted. The theoretical foundation drew upon scholars and critics such as Antonio Candido (1995), Ana Margarida Ramos (2015), Richard Vernon (2015), Andréia de Oliveira-Iguma (2022), Deleuze (2017), Fanuel Díaz (2020), Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2014), Salvatore D’Onofrio (2007), and Sophie Van der Linden (2018), among others, who contributed to the understanding of literature as an exploratory field of human nature and how Mia Couto engages with fracturing themes in the two works analyzed

Indagou-se de que maneira uma obra para crianças pode contribuir para a aproximação do leitor com esses assuntos, bem como o potencial do livro ilustrado em abordá-los de forma inferencial e com poeticidade. Para tanto, foram analisados os procedimentos literários presentes em duas obras com temáticas fraturantes escritas por Mia Couto: O gato e o escuro (2022) e O menino no sapatinho (2014). A pesquisa iniciou-se com a definição do termo fraturante e um breve histórico acerca de assuntos considerados tabus em livros para crianças. Seguiu-se para a contextualização da escrita de Mia Couto e de seu projeto poético, que envolve a realidade colonial e pós-colonial de Moçambique. Por fim, foi realizada uma análise aprofundada do texto e das imagens nas duas obras infantis escolhidas.
