This doctoral research examines the narratives and actions of São Paulo industrial intellectuals associated with the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo concerning the technical and academic training of the brazilian population during the Estado Novo period (1937–1945). The selection of this object of study is justified by the considerable political repression exerted by the federal government against this specific group of intellectuals during the period above. Nevertheless, the engagement of these individuals with educational themes was not nonexistent and thus deserves analysis, enabling the identification of both convergent and divergent elements between the Vargas regime and the São Paulo intellectuals, despite the marked political antagonism between these two forces. From this perspective, we consider Antonio Gramsci’s work Americanism and Fordism a fruitful theoretical and methodological foundation for understanding the industrialization process of the 1930s and 1940s, incorporating in our research the economic and sociocultural objectives that mobilized the efforts of the intellectuals linked to O Estado de S. Paulo about education. Accordingly, we have chosen as the objective of our study to understand the cultural project formulated by the O Estado de S. Paulo group in service of the ongoing industrialism, as well as the actions of these intellectuals in their pursuit of consolidating this ambitious endeavor through the establishment of institutions with a formative character, such as IDORT, the Universidade de São Paulo, and the Escola Livre de Sociologia e Política. The set of sources investigated comprises publications from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, Revista do IDORT archive, and the educational legislation in force at the federal level and in the state of São Paulo. The historiographical study of the praxis of the O Estado de S. Paulo group in the 1930s and 1940s leads us to conclude that coercive imposition proved indispensable for consolidating, in both social and educational spheres, the ideals promoted by the São Paulo intellectuals Instead of employing rationality and intellectual debate as means to achieve hegemony, the use of force, authoritarianism, and oppression prevailed
