Applying time-oriented visualization to open government data

Recently, many countries have started to publish their data as Open Government Data (OGD). With this, society’s interest in the use of OGD for different purposes has been growing; however, the availability of these data is not sufficient for many to use it due to the lack of technical skills. To solve this problem, different visualization tools are used as a way to consume and interact with the data. By deepening the analysis of this scenario with a systematic review of the literature, we discovered an opportunity to use timeoriented data visualizations in the context of OGD. From this initial study, we developed prototypes applied to government databases and conducted a focus group to analyze the perceptions of users. The focus group revealed that the visualization techniques presente in this work helped in knowledge discovery and that each technique has a different performance depending on the use case presented. We believe that our research, in addition to consolidating the use of visualization techniques applied to OGD, has the potential to assist society in adopting certain time-oriented visualizations, according to the analysis we present related to the users’ perception of them. Finally, we believe that some of our contributions, such as the enhancements made in the time-oriented visualizations used in the prototypes of this work, go beyond the universe of OGD and can be applied to the context of data visualization as a whole.
