Resumo: Among the most notorious consequences of the current international financial crisis is the high unemployment rate, in both Brazil and Portugal. Studies indicate that, during periods of economic recession, there is an increase in psychosocial problems, as uncertainty about finding another job causes a decrease in individual well-being. Most studies on the effects of unemployment have been focused on the psychological impacts at the individual level. Few studies have examined how unemployment affects the family, by using different configurations of family unemployment (male unemployment, female unemployment and families in which both members of the couple are unemployed) or by investigating crossover effects, to understand how the condition of the unemployed individual affects other family members. In this study, a first qualitative analysis revealed not only negative aspects but also positive aspects of being unemployed, underscoring the importance of protective factors in this context. Given that families are complex systems, in which individuals participate simultaneously in at least three subsystems (individual, marital and parental), this research aimed to analyze the role of individual and family variables on each subsystem’ satisfaction (satisfaction with life, marital satisfaction and parental satisfaction). Given that professional and family involvements is different according to gender, three family configurations related to unemployment were examined (male unemployment, female unemployment and both couple members unemployment). In both the Portuguese and the Brazilian samples, the group in which both partners were unemployed was the most vulnerable group, with lower ratings of satisfaction. Marital empathy, self-efficacy and family cohesion were relevant predictors of parental, marital and life satisfaction. The protective effect of these variables differed according to the family configuration of unemployment and by gender, but not by country. Crossover effects between members of the couple were observed in families in which women were unemployed: the more empathic the men are, the greater the marital satisfaction of the wives. For the female unemployed group, both spouses’ perception of family cohesion affected their own satisfaction with life, as well as their spouse’s. The results highlight the intensity of unemployment over the family, regardless of the country, evidencing a universal component of the unemployment experience.

The results highlight the intensity of unemployment over the family, regardless of the country, evidencing a universal component of the unemployment experience.L’actuelle crise financière internationale, appelée la “Grande récession”, a déclenché une série d'événements négatifs dans les pays développés et en développement, y compris le Portugal et le Brésil. Parmi les conséquences les plus notables de cette crise, on identifie les taux élevés de chômage. Des études internationales indiquent qu'en période de récession économique, il y a une augmentation des problèmes psychopathologiques et le scénario d'incertitude quant à l'obtention d'autre emploi engendre, chez les chômeurs, une augmentation du stress, de l'anxiété et de la dépression. Cependant, on a constaté que la plupart des études se concentre uniquement sur l'analyse de l'impact psychologique du chômage au niveau individuel, avec peu d'études portant sur les effets croisés de celui-ci sur les autres membres du ménage. Dans cette programme d’études, une première analyse qualitative de l’expérience du chômage a permis d’identifier, au-delàs des aspects négatifs, également des aspects positifs, soulignant ainsi l’importance de l’identification de facteurs protecteurs dans les situations de chômage. Ainsi, compte tenu de la complexité du système familial dans lequel l'individu participe activement au niveau au moins de trois sous-systèmes (individuel, conjugal et parental), cette recherche a analysé le rôle des variables individuelles et familiales pour les niveaux de satisfaction face à l'exercice des rôles dans les trois sous-systèmes (satisfaction face à la vie, satisfaction conjugale et satisfaction parentale). Tenant compte des relations entre rôles familiaux et professionnels et les questions de genre, ont été comparés trois configurations familiales de chômage distinctes (chômage exclusif de l’homme, chômage exclusif de la femme et chômage simultané / double chômage). Tant au Portugal comme au Brésil, on a constaté que le groupe dans lequel les deux partenaires étaient au chômage s’est avéré être le groupe le plus vulnérable, avec la moyenne de satisfaction la plus faible. L'importance de l'empathie conjugale, de l'auto-efficacité et de la cohésion familiale sur les niveaux de satisfaction face à la vie, de satisfaction conjugale et de satisfaction parentale a été observée. Les résultats montrent cependant que l'effet protecteur de telles variables varie plus en fonction du type de configuration familiale et du sexe, qu’en fonction du pays de résidence. Finalement, des effets de cross-over se manifestèrent en situation de double chômage: l’empathie de l’homme est positivement associée á la satisfaction conjugale de son épouse.Dentre as mais notórias sequelas da atual crise financeira internacional está a elevada taxa de desemprego, tanto no Brasil como em Portugal. Estudos indicam que, em tempos de recessão económica, há um aumento dos problemas psicossociais e que o cenário de incerteza sobre conseguir um outro emprego gera, nas pessoas desempregadas, uma redução do bem-estar. Uma boa parte destes estudos centra-se somente na análise do impacto psicológico do desemprego ao nível individual, sendo poucos os estudos que investigam o modo como o desemprego impacta a família, seja por analisar diferentes tipos de configuração familiar de desemprego (desemprego masculino, desemprego feminino e duplo desemprego), seja pela análise dos efeitos de crossover entre os membros do casal. Na presente pesquisa, um primeiro olhar qualitativo sobre a experiência de desemprego permitiu identificar, além dos aspetos negativos, também aspetos positivos, realçando a importância de fatores protetores na situação de desemprego. Considerando a complexidade do sistema familiar, onde o indivíduo participa simultaneamente de pelo menos três subsistemas (individual, conjugal e parental), esta investigação analisou o papel das variáveis individuais e familiares no nível de satisfação com o desempenho de papéis nos três subsistemas (satisfação com a vida, satisfação conjugal e satisfação parental). Para isso, comparamos três diferentes grupos de acordo com a configuração do desemprego na família, dadas as diferenças entre o desempenho de papéis profissionais e familiares, que estão ligadas a questões de género. Nas amostras de ambos os países, observou-se que o grupo em que os dois membros do casal estavam em desemprego mostrou-se o grupo mais vulnerável, com menores indicadores de satisfação. Aferiu-se ainda a importância da empatia conjugal, da autoeficácia e da coesão familiar sobre os níveis de satisfação. As influências de crossover entre o casal manifestaram-se nas situações em que a mulher está em desemprego (grupos duplo desemprego e desemprego feminino): quanto mais empáticos os homens são, maior a satisfação conjugal das esposas. Em situação de desemprego unicamente das esposas, a perceção de coesão familiar por parte de ambos os cônjuges impacta tanto na própria satisfação com a vida como na do outro cônjuge. Os resultados ressaltam a intensidade do desemprego sobre as famílias, independentemente do país, evidenciando uma componente transcultural desta experiência.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)CAPES: 9699-13-9porUniversidade Federal de São CarlosCâmpus São CarlosPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Psicologia - PPGPsiUFSCarDesempregoGêneroBem-estarCIENCIAS HUMANAS::PSICOLOGIA::PSICOLOGIA DO DESENVOLVIMENTO HUMANOO papel do gênero na experiência do desemprego de casais portugueses e brasileirosThe role of gender in the unemployment experience of Portuguese and Brazilian couplesLe rôle du genre dans l'expérience du chômage des couples portugais et brésiliensinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisOnlineinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFSCARinstname:Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCAR)instacron:UFSCARORIGINALtese_UFSCar_final.pdftese_UFSCar_final.pdfapplication/pdf1665858https://{{ getenv "DSPACE_HOST" "repositorio.ufscar.br" }}/bitstream/ufscar/10154/1/tese_UFSCar_final.pdf223a14f4154e35209c2b9f8a1842d2dfMD51Carta_Joyce_Aguiar_BCo.pdfCarta_Joyce_Aguiar_BCo.pdfapplication/pdf141826https://{{ getenv "DSPACE_HOST" "repositorio.ufscar.br" }}/bitstream/ufscar/10154/2/Carta_Joyce_Aguiar_BCo.pdfb160daf8a98a6afcb8c9543afa9c8c16MD52LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
