Resumo: In 2012, the new UFSCar campus Lagoa do Sino was implemented in the southwest of the state of São Paulo, close to the cities of Campina do Monte Alegre and Buri. The activities started in 2014, when the first students and staff arrived to study and work. However, it is located in an area with low HDI (Human development index), so Campina do Monte Alegre had to adapt to this new population very quickly, without the necessary services and structure. Even with low social and economic indexes, the area is one of the most conserved in the state, with many national and state parks. Considering this new scenario, the amount of reported road killed animals was increasing. For this reason, our goals were to (1) study this problem through 74km of the road SP-189 (from Raposo Tavares road to Buri, crossing Campina do Monte Alegre and the new campus), (2) map the road killing hotspots, (3) identify the season with higher levels of accidents and (4) characterize the adjacent landscape through a 5km-extension buffer. During one year (July/2016- June/2017), we monitored the road once a week looking for road killed animals. We found 172 killed animals and 158 of them were wild. The majority of them were birds (69), followed by mammals (44), reptiles (23) and amphibians (22). The most common group was wild dogs (Cerdocyon thous and Lycalopex vetulus) (11 animals) while the only vulnerable species, according to IUCN, was the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla - 3 animals found). The most frequent landscape was crop rotation (bean, corn, wheat) (28%), followed by fragmented vegetation (20%), pasture (18%) and forestry (14%), suggesting a very anthropized area with no predominant landscape. The road killing during the rainy season (spring and summer) were significantly higher than those reported in the dry season (autumn and winter). Birds and reptiles’ roadkilling were also significantly different between the two seasons. Additionally, two of the three hotspots found were in the two extremities of Campina do Monte Alegre, suggesting a direct influence from the vehicles movement from UFSCar students and staff, and the third hotspot was identified between Raposo Tavares road and this city. According to the spatial estististics analysis, we confirmed that there is a stronger influence of the urban area on the incidence of the hotspots. The results were applied in two different activities to mitigate the impacts of roadkilling in wild animals. The first one was an educational activity with the children of a public school in Campina do Monte Alegre to raise awareness about the threats to wildlife conservation, while the second measure was a partnership with the city hall of Campina do Monte Alegre in order to decrease the accidents envolving wild animals in the two hotspots near the city. Therefore, this kind of work is extremely important to identify the real problems of the area and also to implement effective and viable solutions.

Therefore, this kind of work is extremely important to identify the real problems of the area and also to implement effective and viable solutions.Em 2012, teve início a implantação do novo campus Lagoa do Sino da UFSCar, no sudoeste paulista, cuja cidade mais próxima é Campina do Monte Alegre e depois Buri. As atividades no campus começaram em 2014, com a vinda de novos estudantes e funcionários. Localizada em uma região com baixo IDH, Campina do Monte Alegre precisou se adaptar a esse grande contingente populacional muito rapidamente. Mesmo com índices sociais e econômicos baixos, a região ainda é rica em recursos naturais, com unidades de conservação e áreas ainda preservadas. Considerando o panorama da região e o aumento da movimentação populacional, espera-se o aumento do número de atropelamentos de fauna. Assim, o objetivo do projeto foi estudar essa ameaça à fauna dentro de 74km da rodovia SP-189, que liga a rodovia Raposo Tavares à cidade de Buri, passando por Campina do Monte Alegre e também chegando até o campus Lagoa do Sino. Além disso, objetivou-se identificar os principais pontos de atropelamento, a época do ano em que mais ocorrem e avaliar aspectos da paisagem que possam influenciar nos atropelamentos. Durante um ano (julho/2016 a junho/2017), foram realizados monitoramentos semanais à procura de animais atropelados pela rodovia. Quando encontrados, o ponto de localização era marcado, era tirada uma foto do indivíduo e também era recolhida uma amostra de tecido para possíveis análises genéticas, para identificação da espécie. A caracterização quanto ao uso e ocupação de solo mostrou que a área é muito antropizada e sem uma paisagem predominante, sendo mais frequentemente utilizada para rotação de cultura (28%), seguida de fragmentos de vegetação natural (20%), pastagem (18,4%) e silvicultura (14%). Foram encontrados 172 animais atropelados, sendo 158 selvagens. Destes, a maioria foram aves (69), seguido de mamíferos (44), répteis (23) e anfíbios (22). O grupo selvagem mais encontrado foi o de canídeos, Cerdocyon thous e/ou Lycalopex vetulus (11 indivíduos), enquanto a única espécie ameaçada foi o tamanduá bandeira (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), com três indivíduos. Os atropelamentos durante a época chuvosa (primavera e verão) foram significativamente mais frequentes do que na época mais seca (outono e inverno). Também foi significativa a diferença de atropelamentos de aves e répteis entre essas épocas. Foi visto que dentre os 74 km monitorados, foram identificados três hotspots de atropelamentos situados próximo ao município de Campina do Monte Alegre. Dois destes hotspots estão localizados na entrada e saída da cidade, e um terceiro no trecho entre a Rodovia Raposo Tavares e o referido município. Através da análise estatística espacial, foi confirmado que há uma maior influência da área urbana na região dos hotspots. Os resultados obtidos foram utilizados na aplicação de duas medidas para minimizar o impacto da rodovia sobre a fauna local. A primeira medida foi a realização de uma atividade educativa em uma escola estadual de Campina do Monte Alegre com o objetivo de sensibilizar as crianças quanto às ameaças à fauna local, bem como quanto à importância da conservação da mesma. A segunda foi a proposição conjunta com a prefeitura de Campina do Monte Alegre de medidas mitigadoras para minimizar o impacto da rodovia monitorada sobre a fauna local. Sendo assim, a realização de tais estudos tem uma importância indiscutível quanto à identificação dos reais problemas e, consequentemente, ao planejamento de ações para contorná-los de modo eficiente.OutraporUniversidade Federal de São CarlosCâmpus São CarlosPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Conservação da Fauna - PPGCFauUFSCarAtropelamentoFaunaHotspotsWildlifeRoad killingCIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS::ECOLOGIADos impactos à conservação de fauna: a implantação do campus Lagoa do Sino e a incidência de atropelamentos de animais silvestresImpacts on and conservation of wildlife: the implementation of Lagoa do Sino campus and the incidence of wild animals roadkillinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisOnline6006d131edf-18b3-465b-8a52-8607e22e88d6info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFSCARinstname:Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCAR)instacron:UFSCARORIGINALformulario entrega definitiva - Alexandra.docxformulario entrega definitiva - Alexandra.docxapplication/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document124943https://repositorio.ufscar.br/bitstreams/b787c360-be2d-40e5-8d7d-3935ab1f1cc7/downloadde1ff59fd2089a2a8b357dc8791f73b4MD53trueAnonymousREADdissertação final corrigida - Adriana Cravo.pdfdissertação final corrigida - Adriana Cravo.pdfapplication/pdf4464555https://repositorio.ufscar.br/bitstreams/7bec1616-f8dd-41cf-bceb-d3a8fd064537/downloadf851a331d8d6d5558a7b5272e1d5ce8eMD55falseAnonymousREADLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
