Resumo: Depression and suicidal ideation are complex phenomena influenced by various factors and affecting different social groups and cultures. However, they have been relatively underexplored, particularly among religious individuals. To contribute to the understanding of this subject, this research aims to examine the life trajectories of consecrated religious individuals who have embraced a vocational ideal. Specifically, it seeks to understand how they structure their life projects based on their choices and how, along the way, they may develop or manifest depression and suicidal ideation. This study, both theoretical and empirical, is organized in a multi-paper format, resulting in five articles—three theoretical and two empirical. The first three chapters, of a theoretical nature, present a review of the last twenty years of research on depression, suicidal ideation, and spirituality, as well as an articulation of the theoretical approaches that underpin the study. The final two chapters focus on the empirical study, conducted with six consecrated religious individuals—three men and three women—from the Roman Catholic Church. The five articles complement each other as follows: a) A systematic review providing an overview of research on depression, suicidal ideation, and the religious factor, particularly among young people—the group most affected by these issues. b) A literature review, previously published, that specifically examines depression and suicidal ideation in the context of consecrated religious life. c) An integrative review that expands on the findings of the second article, exploring the complexities surrounding suicidal ideation within religious communities and among priests. d) An empirical study, published as an article, presenting the narratives of the six religious participants. This study integrates phenomenological analysis with systemic perspectives, psychosociology, and the psychology of religion to describe and interpret their life journeys and the emergence of depression and suicidal ideation. e) The final empirical article examines depression, suicidal ideation in religious life, and the meaning of life, using the same theoretical framework as the fourth article. It also expands on Amedeo Giorgi’s method for understanding the meaning of the whole, as well as Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy approach to the meaning of life. The first three articles, through their review of existing literature, reveal that the academic field has been increasingly engaging with research on depression and suicidal ideation. The empirical research in the last two articles highlights the significance of family history, showing that key life experiences are often shaped by exposure to violence in both family and social contexts. While these factors may contribute to a history of depression and suicidal ideation, they are frequently reinterpreted and transformed through personal resilience, spirituality, and institutional support. The conclusion drawn from the literature review underscores the need for expanded research on religious individuals. The findings of the empirical research suggest that religious institutions should place greater emphasis on the formation process of their members. This includes a deeper examination of candidates’ life histories and the implementation of multidisciplinary teams to provide adequate support during formation. Additionally, institutions must recognize their responsibility in offering ongoing care for those who serve as caregivers.

Additionally, institutions must recognize their responsibility in offering ongoing care for those who serve as caregivers. Submitted by Ihorranna Oliveira (ihorranna.oliveira@ucb.br) on 2025-05-28T16:25:19Z No. of bitstreams: 1 RubensMotaTeseParcial2025.pdf: 419489 bytes, checksum: 697a4c43133af6d8c33b806ad38efc02 (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2025-07-11T19:38:59Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 RubensMotaTeseParcial2025.pdf: 419489 bytes, checksum: 697a4c43133af6d8c33b806ad38efc02 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2025-07-11T19:38:59Z (GMT).
