Resumo: Studies have shown that parents' perceptions about their children's body mass and size are extremely important in the development of public health interventions. Concomitantly, several studies suggest that childhood obesity is a risk factor for the development of obesity in adolescence and adulthood. The literature has also shown that children and their parents often underestimate their body size. However, this does not seem to be enough to promote changes in behavior. The recognition of excess body mass becomes the first step towards participating in obesity prevention and treatment programs. The aim of this study was to assess maternal perceptions of child body image. The study included 653 children aged between six and ten years (SD = 2 (two)), 311 boys (47.6%), and 342 girls (52.4%) enrolled in the first, second, third or fourth year of Elementary School I in Public schools located in municipalities of Vale do Rio Jauru, in the Northwest region of the State of Mato Grosso. The study also included the mothers of the selected children, most of whom had no more than four years of schooling. The variables evaluated were: mother's perception of the child's real body size (assessed using the Body Perception Assessment Software (SAPECO), body mass index, and the mother's education level. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0® using statistical tests, chi-square and Fisher's exact test. A significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyses. Among the main results, there is a greater tendency among mothers of girls to overestimate the body mass of their daughters, while mothers of boys tend to underestimate the body mass of their children. These findings indicate the need for interventions designed to improve maternal body perception.

Submitted by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2022-05-11T22:41:07Z No. of bitstreams: 1 GedsonCardosoKempeTese2021.pdf: 807393 bytes, checksum: 169610de8d7573fca689eb1d65c5d553 (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2022-05-11T22:41:27Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 GedsonCardosoKempeTese2021.pdf: 807393 bytes, checksum: 169610de8d7573fca689eb1d65c5d553 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-05-11T22:41:27Z (GMT).
