Digital transformation has been a major trend in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), a factor that is driving the growth in the volume of data produced in these organizations. In response to the changes brought about by digitalization, HEIs have begun to develop strategies for using data to support their processes and institutional mission. Considering data orientation as an essential practice for improving organizational efficiency, this study aims to expand a data orientation maturity model for specific application in HEIs, based on the proposal of good practices. The methodology included a literature review to study the profile of publications on the subject and the identification of relevant practices for incorporation into a reference model. Firstly, it highlights specific maturity models for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), analyzing the existing literature and the current context of these publications. Secondly, it presents the opportunities and challenges associated with data orientation in HEIs, identifying key factors and good practices that can be applied to improve data use and decision-making strategies in these organizations. The literature review identified 45 good practices related to data orientation in HEIs, covering six organizational dimensions. These practices can be used by universities to assess their current situation, identify gaps and guide their strategies along the transition in maturity levels.
