Objective: to investigate the association between the frequency of stressful events and cytokines in the elderly aged 78 years or older. Methods: the elderly answered a questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic variables, indicated which stressful events in the Life Stressful Events Inventory occurred in the last five years and answered the geriatric depression scale (GDS). Dosed were: interleukin (IL) 10, IL-6, IL-4, IL-2, tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and gamma interferon (IFNy). Descriptive analysis was performed to characterize the sample. To investigate the association between the variables, a multiple linear regression model was developed, using the Backward method. Results: The study included 91 elderly people with an average age of 82 years. More than half of the sample reported the death of a loved one as the most prevalent stressor event (61%). In this sample, it was possible to notice that the more stressful events were reported, the lower the level of IL-4, in the same way as the widow's marital status, where the data showed that those who are widowed have less stressful events compared to those who are married. Conclusion: The importance of a more careful look by health professionals in the multidimensional assessment of the elderly was evidenced, in order to obtain subsidies for the implementation of specific programs and interventions that can lessen the perception of stressful events experienced, collaborating with less damage. due to immunosenescence.
