Resumo: The aging process is often related to the higher prevalence of chronic diseases. Thus the elderly constitute the population that most consumes medications, in addition they are the most susceptible to drug interactions and adverse reactions, often caused by polypharmacy. In this context, it is necessary to know the drugs that pose the greatest risk to the elderly, known as Potentially Inappropriate Medications to the Elderly. Objective: To describe the prevalence of inappropriate drug use among the elderly according to Beers' criteria. Methods: Systematic Review through the PRISMA Protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes), where it was searched for publications, without restriction of languages, in the reference bases PUBMED, SCIELO, PsycINFO, OVID, EBSCOhost and Regional Portal of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), which has indexed the bases MEDLINE, LILACS, PAHO, BDENF, IBECS among others. Results: We found 25 publications, from 2011 to 2017, of outpatient, home, hospital and ILP samples, with the majority of studies being conducted in the Southeast region. The prevalence of MPII varied widely from 17% to 98.2%. The most prescribed MPII classes were, in ascending order: BZD, Cardiology, Antidepressants and NSAIDs. Conclusions: The prevalence of IPMI varies according to the sample, although its prevalence is normally high. It is known its relation with adverse reactions in the elderly, therefore it is necessary the awareness of health professionals and patients, in order to rationalize the use of these drugs in this population.

It is known its relation with adverse reactions in the elderly, therefore it is necessary the awareness of health professionals and patients, in order to rationalize the use of these drugs in this population.O processo de envelhecimento está muitas vezes relacionado à maior prevalência de doenças crônicas. Submitted by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2019-09-10T14:25:51Z No. of bitstreams: 1 BrunoGedeondeAraujoDissertacao2019.pdf: 865710 bytes, checksum: 0693b8e9f1f04b69abd866ded21e5b0e (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2019-09-10T14:25:56Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 BrunoGedeondeAraujoDissertacao2019.pdf: 865710 bytes, checksum: 0693b8e9f1f04b69abd866ded21e5b0e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2019-09-10T14:25:56Z (GMT).
