Resumo: This study investigates the impact of the expansion of Caixa Econômica Federal in the banking market of Goiás, driven by the centralization of the state Government’s Payroll in 2011. The analysis focuses on changes in banking concentration in municipalities across the state, using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) and the Difference-in-Differences (Diff-in-Diff) model to estimate the causal effect of Caixa’s presence on market structure. The results indicate that the bank’s expansion led to a decrease in banking concentration in the municipalities that received new branches, reinforcing the hypothesis that the entry of a new competitor can alter market distribution. Additionally, the study identified that local economic factors, such as credit operations and municipal GDP, influence banking concentration dynamics, suggesting that the market structure is sensitive to regional characteristics. While the findings demonstrate a significant effect of Caixa in reducing concentration, the study highlights limitations in measuring competition and recommends future research that expands this approach by considering additional variables and the impact of digital banks.

A análise centra-se na variação da concentração bancária nos municípios goianos, utilizando o Índice Herfindahl-Hirschman (HHI) e o modelo de Diferença em Diferenças (Diff in-Diff), para estimar o efeito causal da presença da CAIXA sobre a estrutura concorrencial do setor. Os resultados indicam que a expansão da instituição levou a uma redução na concentração bancária nos municípios que receberam novas agências, reforçando a hipótese de que a entrada de um novo concorrente pode alterar a distribuição de mercado. O estudo também identificou que fatores econômicos locais, como operações de crédito e PIB municipal, influenciam a dinâmica da concentração bancária, sugerindo que a estrutura do mercado bancário é sensível a características regionais.
