Introduction: little is known about end-of-life care patterns for hospitalized elderly people. In this sense, it is essential to know the perspectives of health professionals on dignity in the care of terminal elderly patients. Objective: to investigate the perceptions of health professionals about dignity in the care of terminally ill elderly patients. Method: a research of mixed approach, exploratory and descriptive nature, with non-probabilistic and intentional sampling of health professionals working in two public hospitals of the Federal District. We included health professionals who had been performing their regular duties for at least six months at the research site and who were present in the scenario during the data collection period. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview script containing socio-professional data and guiding questions based on the mnemonic ABCD, from Chochinov's Model of Dignity. The quantitative data were treated by descriptive and inferential statistics, while the qualitative data were processed by the IRaMuTeQ software and interpreted using Bardin's content analysis technique, thematic modality. Results: 101 health professionals participated in the study. The majority were married (n = 66, 65.35%) and female (n = 79, 78.22%). The mean age was 39 years, with 65.34% in the age group between 30-50 years. The textual data were organized into three classes: work routines with elderly patients at the end of life; professional skills; dignity at the end of life. Overall, respondents agreed on the meaning of dignity in end-of-life care: treating patients with respect, compassion, and personalized care until death. This aligns with the vision of preserving dignity through attitudes, behaviors, compassion, and dialogue. Final considerations: preserving dignity requires a holistic approach to patient well-being. The strengths of the research include the number of participants, the methodological approach and the theoretical framework. However, additional research is needed to develop care protocols and guidelines for health education.
