Resumo: This study researched if the social representations in the occidental culture tend to associate the female with the maternity. The perspective non-essentialist to the maternity was elected to substantiate such idea, therefore the construction of this phenomenon was analyzed. Understand which forms of subjection emerged from the conception of women, in case existed a dissociation between this and the conception of mother, and reflect on the current meanings of these social representations were the aims of this work. The empirical research defined as subjects two groups of women who say, nowadays, no to maternity: infertile women and those that had deliberately chosen not to have children. The significant association that is intrinsic to the sociological and subjective levels of the feminine reality related to maternity was the instrument trough the present vitality of the association between the feminine with the maternity in the culture context in question was studied. The empirical research was hosted on Julio Muller Hospital, of Federal University of Mato Grosso, in Cuiaba/MT. The researcher concluded, in the empirical work, that there are women who reference themselves to the maternity and others who had “chosen” meanings to their femininity. Moreover, empirical facts not predicted here emerged in the debates, such as: 1) the interference of each woman childhood as a fundamental factor to their choices before maternity; 2) alterity; 3) freedom; among other points.

Submitted by Claudia Carvalho (claudia.carvalho@ucb.br) on 2023-11-27T21:12:02Z No. of bitstreams: 1 RenataCostaDissertacao2004.pdf: 792422 bytes, checksum: 7971669148eeb2da138ff39218996fcf (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2023-12-07T17:51:01Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 RenataCostaDissertacao2004.pdf: 792422 bytes, checksum: 7971669148eeb2da138ff39218996fcf (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2023-12-07T17:51:01Z (GMT).
