Chronic noncommunicable diseases constitute a major health problem, both due to the associated mortality and the heavy burden of related morbidities. Among them are Systemic Arterial Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus, whose control and prevention is a challenge for Primary Care, especially the Family Health Strategy. It is a qualitative study that analyzed the work process of Family Health Unit nurses in the attention to users with hypertension and/or diabetes in the city of Cama?ari-BA. The production of data occurred through semi-structured interviews, systematic observation of the nurse's work in assisting these users, and documentary analysis. The analysis of the data occurred by content analysis, thematic modality, based on the Marxist theory of the work process. These techniques and the theoretical elements used allowed to characterize the nurses' work process, identifying their practices and what these professionals understand as the subject, object, purpose and instruments of the work process, and the facilities and weaknesses encountered by them. We find that the nurses' work process is influenced by several external factors, and it is confused and disorganized, especially since there is no clarity as to their object of work and objective to be achieved with their work, and about the documents that should guide their practice in Primary Care. In this sense, with a view to a better definition of their work process, it is necessary that management and professionals are aligned, within a structured health care project to users with hypertension and/or diabetes, planned and developed jointly, respecting the specifics and limitations of each locality, and including effective community participation.
