This dissertation presents ways to think about the different dimensions that the historical fact attains in the fiction O Irmão Alemão, written by Chico Buarque de Hollanda in 2014. This novel is a different stage of this author literature style, that joins his life’s aspects and historical episodes with fictional elements. Besides, this essay has the purpose to reflect on the paradoxical relations between literature and history in the composition quoted to identify how these items are introduced in the writer’s narrative, on the verge to be free from the imposition of history and the acknowlegdement of narrative as autonomous literary creation. The applied methodology is based on the participant research as an actor. In this perspective, it is justified as a qualitative bibliographical research, since it attends on the understanding of the phenomenal and to the basic’s attribution meanings of this qualitative research process. Therefore, it is founded on bibliographical investigations, with emphasis on the discussion about the reader and the relations by both literature and reality. Accordingly, we analyze Chico Buarque's novel that reflects the artistic’s process elaboration itself, but at the same time it uses history to challenge its veracity. For the accomplishment of the dissertation, the methodology consists the comparative analysis of literary and historiographical books, articles, magazines and other materials dealing with the subject. The historiographical metafiction is, therefore , observed by Linda Hutcheon (1991) studies and scholars such as Zênia de Faria (2012) and Maria Tereza de Freitas (1986). In order to study the documents that are used as "referential illusion" in the novel by Chico Buarque, we are fundamentally worthy of Antoine Compagnon (2010).
