Resumo: This dissertation seeks to reflect on the role of human character in the social philosophy of Erich Fromm. This study is based on the systematic reading of his following books: Escape From Freedom (1941) Man for Himsef (1947) The Sane Society (1955) which constitute his characterology. The concept of character provides socio-psychological relations in the work of Erich Fromm; at the same time, this concept articulates and streamlines the interaction between psychological and social context, allowing the seizure of a constituent moment of the political complexity; thus, may contribute to the understanding of cultural and social phenomena that involve character structure of individuals. In the first chapter we present the concept of human nature that aims to establish a source of determinations for the operation of the character, and constitute the normative aspect of Fromm´s social theory. In the second chapter we show how the author works the formation of individual character and social character of modern man. In the third chapter we seek to expose the role of the character in relation to the typical economic formations of modernity and contemporaneity, aiming to present the socio-psychological basis for the diagnosis of contexts and recent social phenomena

Este estudo está baseado na leitura sistemática dos seus seguintes livros: O Medo à Liberdade (1941) Análise do Homem (1947) e Psicanálise da Sociedade Contemporânea (1955) que constituem sua caracterologia. O conceito de caráter, estabelece relações sociopsicológicas na obra de Erich Fromm; ao mesmo tempo, esse conceito articula e dinamiza a interação entre o âmbito psicológico e o social, possibilitando a apreensão de um momento constituinte da complexidade política; com isso, pode contribuir para o entendimento de fenômenos culturais e sociais que envolvem a estrutura de caráter dos indivíduos. No primeiro capítulo apresentamos a concepção de natureza humana que visa a estabelecer uma fonte de determinações para o funcionamento do caráter, e constituir o aspecto normativo da teoria social de Fromm. No segundo capítulo mostramos como o autor trabalha a formação do caráter individual e do caráter social do homem moderno.
