Atitudes do idoso face ao lazer : um estudo em instituições de longa permanência

World population ageing and its social and economic repercussions bring concerns about accountability for the care of the elderly population. The demands of contemporary life have led families to seek increasingly long-stay institutions. Leisure, while basic human need, emerges as possibility of emancipation, breaking traditional proposals of centrality of work category, approaching the context in which the elderly live. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the attitudes of elderly living in long-stay institutions, regularly registered in Maringá-PR-Brazil with leisure. It was also sought to identify leisure activities performed by the elderly, as well as evaluate their cognition. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study, a quantitative approach, carried out with the elderly living in long-stay institutions, between January and March of 2013. 161 elderly were included in the study on the basis of the following criteria: having time of institutionalization of at least six months in long-stay institutions, be able to answer the questions of the study from obtaining the minimum score on the Mini Mental status (MMSE). After the cognitive assessment, it totaled 97 elderly participants. In addition to this, two other instruments were applied, one for the demographic characterization, institutionalization and leisure and scale of attitudes to leisure. Data were analyzed descriptively and by means of Chi-square tests and Fisher exact, for the association of the dependent variables with the independent test, Mann-Whitney (rank sum test), to test hypotheses about cognitive decline in each domain of the MMSE, and Spearman correlation, to make the correlation between the subscales comprising the range of attitudes to leisure. It was observed that 39.8% of the elderly showed cognitive deficit, according to MEEM, and showed by statistical analysis, worse cognitive performance female in relation to the male. The fields that comprise the MMSE had significant association with cognitive decline, and orientation, attention and memory and calculation of evocation presented a higher influence on the presence of cognitive deficit. With regard to leisure, categorical variables age and income had a significant association with leisure activities. The results reflected a positive attitude of elderly in relation to leisure activities, except in the behavioral component. It is perceived attention to importance of reorientation of vocational training of nurses, in order to be able to apply evaluation tools of cognitive decline in the elderly and to develop intervention strategies that could slow their development. The nursing staff, by the multidisciplinary team, can act at leisure in a reflective, critical, enjoyable and creative regarding contradictions of institutional environment, aiming at the quality of life of the elderly.
