This work exposes results of the analysis of the relationship between the agrarian question and the social struggles for land and has as empirical reference the Movement of Landless Rural Workers – MST. This analysis established the relationship between the categories: agrarian question and social question, showing the expressions of this relationship within the state of Maranhão, under the aegis of neoliberal ideology, when capital develops in the countryside imposing increasingly complex configurations of the agrarian question. This discussion explains the expansion and consequences of agribusiness in that state, from exponents such as monocultures of soy and eucalyptus, in addition to the so-called large development projects that require large areas for their implementation, causing profound transformations in the field, such as worsening land conflicts and exploitation in labor relations. In this context, are also made explicit, the forms of political organization of rural workers in Brazil and their specificities in Maranhão, with emphasis on the outbreak of the MST. The result of the research shows that, although the investments of capital and the intensification of the expressions of the agrarian question are diversified, rural workers have engendered strategies of organization and resistance, in the construction and reconstruction of a struggle that aims beyond access to land, the implementation of public policies and fundamental rights historically conquered, which ensure the production of material existence. Considering that its demands signal the overcoming of structural contradictions in the hegemonic mode of production, the struggle of the Movement on screen materializes efforts and strategies outlining a path of protests and struggles for another sociability.
