Resumo: | The influence of termites on soils has been widely discussed in the scientific literature. Recognized as ecosystem engineers, these insects promote significant modifications in the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the environments they inhabit. Understanding whether there are general patterns in termite influence, or which factors drive variation at smaller spatial scales, is essential for assessing their true ecological importance. However, the literature reveals conflicting findings. While some studies report positive effects of termites on various soil properties, others document opposite outcomes. In light of these discrepancies, this thesis investigates the factors responsible for such differences. The thesis is structured into three chapters. The first chapter presents a systematic review that examines how termite influence on soil properties varies according to soil class and termite subfamily. The second chapter present field data comparing termite effects in areas with distinct soil types. Furthermore, the third chapter evaluates the potential of termite constructions as carbon reservoirs in semiarid environments. The results suggest that termites adopt different strategies depending on the soil class. In general, termite activity reduces the sand fraction while increasing the proportions of silt and clay. However, in clay-rich soils, this influence is not significant. Similar patterns are observed across different termite subfamilies, which construct diverse nest types and consequently have varying impacts on soil properties. A notable example is the Macrotermitinae subfamily. Their nests, which harbor symbiotic fungi, increase soil pH—an effect not observed in other subfamilies. Studies that identify termite species and soil classes, and that include comparisons across multiple regions, are essential for establishing more consistent patterns regarding the ecological impacts of these insects. The analysis of Constrictotermes cyphergaster hypogeal constructions, conducted in this thesis, revealed that termite-induced changes in soil properties vary depending on the study area. Moreover, this species was found to contribute to carbon storage in nutrient-poor soils, particularly in Caatinga environments. |

Reconhecidos como engenheiros dos ecossistemas, esses insetos promovem modificações nas propriedades físico-químicas e biológicas dos ambientes onde habitam. Compreender se há padrões gerais em sua influência nas propriedades do solo, ou quais fatores determinam variações em escalas locais é essencial para avaliar sua real importância ecológica. No entanto, a literatura apresenta controvérsias quanto ao efeito dos cupins em variáveis físico-químicas do solo. Enquanto alguns estudos apontam efeitos positivos dos cupins em determinadas variáveis, outros relatam efeitos opostos. Diante disso, esta tese investigou os fatores responsáveis por essas diferenças. A estrutura da tese está organizada em três capítulos. O primeiro apresenta uma revisão sistemática que analisa como a influência dos cupins no solo varia de acordo com sua subfamília e a classe de solo. Os capítulos 2 e 3 abordam comparações de campo sobre o efeito dos cupins arborícolas em diferentes tipos de solo, focando na construção de estruturas hipógeas conectadas aos ninhos arborícolas. Além disso, o terceiro capítulo avalia o potencial dessas construções como reservatórios de carbono em ambientes semiáridos. Os resultados indicam que os cupins adotam estratégias distintas conforme a classe de solo em que constroem seus ninhos. De maneira geral, reduzem a fração de areia e aumentam os teores de argila e silte; entretanto, em solos naturalmente mais argilosos, essa influência não é significativa. O mesmo ocorre entre diferentes subfamílias de cupins, que constroem ninhos distintos e, consequentemente, geram impactos variados sobre as propriedades do solo. Um exemplo notável é a subfamília Macrotermitinae, cujos ninhos, que abrigam fungos simbiontes, elevam o pH do solo, efeito não observado em outras subfamílias. Estudos que identifiquem as espécies de cupins, as classes de solos e que realizem comparações entre diferentes localidades são fundamentais para estabelecer padrões mais robustos sobre os impactos desses insetos. A análise das construções hipógeas de Constrictotermes cyphergaster realizada nesta tese evidenciou que, dependendo da área estudada, os cupins modificam variáveis distintas do solo.
