Resumo: This study aims at analyzing the existential drama of the main character of the Exílio, Lya Luft‘s novel, by means of the symbolic approach of the content of the novel, how and where the meaning of elements composing the process of individuation, as exposed by Marie Louise von Franz, in O Homem e Seus Símbolos (2005), analytical psychology collection of texts, and by junguian ideas regarding human psyche, based on the archetypes within the personal and collective unconscious through that process such as manifestations of the persona, the shadow, the animus and the Self. Our stand point was to belief that the understanding of the novel depends on grasping the symbolic nature of those elements and their representations in the plot, as well as the connection they maintain with each other and their relevance to the structure of the novel and to the development of its heroine, Doutora.
