This research analyzes the work The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886), by the Russian Leo Nikolaievich Tolstoy, from the perspective of existentialist philosophy and, more specifically, the concept of anguish, which is one of the constituent themes of this philosophical field. This dissertation's main objective is to analyze how anguish manifests itself in the narrative and ultimately leads to the protagonist's moral decline. It suggests, as a research hypothesis, the realization of the existential triangle composed of ascension, anguish, and decline, respectively. This is a bibliographic review study that included the theoretical propositions of Jean Paul Sartre, as set out in his works Being and Nothingness (1943) and Existentialism is a Humanism (1946), as well as studies by Bezerra (2010); Cunha (2024); Han (2020); Heidegger (1927); Benjamin (2011), among others. It is under the consummation of the dialogue between Literature and Philosophy that this dissertation is established.
