Resumo: Tooth whitening is a routine clinical procedure in the dental clinic, with technological advances, the use of violet light emitting diode (LED) (405 nm) has brought a new whitening method that causes less damage and sensitivity, offering the same efficacy as gold standard (35% hydrogen peroxide). The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the different current tooth whitening techniques comparing violet LED with other whitening techniques and the effects on whitening efficiency and tooth sensitivity. Seventy-five patients underwent tooth whitening as recommended by the manufacturer, and were randomly distributed into five groups with different treatments: G1 (35% hydrogen peroxide), G2 (35% hydrogen peroxide + Green LED), G3 (hydrogen peroxide 35% + Blue LED), G4 (35% Hydrogen Peroxide + Violet LED) and G5(Violet LED). Tooth sensitivity was recorded during bleaching with a 0-10 visual analogue scale (VAS) and tooth color measurement was performed before (T0) and 30 days after bleaching (T1), with the Easyshade Advance dental spectrophotometer 4.0 Vita - Wilcos®. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test and Kruskal-Wallis with a significance level of p < 0.05. It was found that the average age of participants was 27 years and most were female. Regarding sensitivity, no statistically significant differences were found between groups. The results showed that violet LED was not able to lighten teeth at the same intensity when used alone. However, as sensitivity was not consistently reported, it can be suggested that violet LED treatment had the best sensitivity outcomes, changing the enamel color by one hue on the color scale.
