Resumo: The balance between fresh water input and evaporation can be used to classify estuaries as positive and inverse. Positive estuaries have a progressive saline gradient downstream of the sea, while in inverse estuaries the highest salinity values are found upstream of the sea. Although they differ in terms of the saline gradient, both estuaries are productive, biodiverse and dynamic ecosystems, although human actions have been putting this status at risk. In this context, it is essential that biomonitoring programs adopt methods that provide accurate, fast and low-cost results to assess the environmental quality of estuaries. In addition, understanding the relationship between taxonomic wealth and functional diversity is fundamental, in view of the changes that human impacts have on biodiversity. Thus, chapter 1 aimed to test the efficiency of sieves with 1 mm mesh and the combination of 1 + 0.5 mm meshes in estimating the composition and structure of the Polychaeta fauna along the estuarine gradient during the rainy and dry periods. The main results indicate that the inclusion of the 0.5 mm mesh data did not increase the statistical power in detecting significant differences in the structure of the Polychaeta fauna when using the 1 mm mesh or combined meshes. However, exclusive taxa of the 0.5 mm mesh can contribute with essential information, especially when the assessment is made purely based on taxonomic wealth. Therefore, we suggest that the 1 mm mesh can be used in biomonitoring studies in tropical estuaries, as long as the assessment is made based on the combination of structural attributes and diversity indexes. Chapter 2 aimed to evaluate the relationship between taxonomic richness (S) with functional richness (FRic), functional uniformity (FEve), functional divergence (FDiv) and functional redundancy (FRed) of Polychaeta in typical tropical estuaries and tropical semiarid estuaries, northeast of Brazil. The main results show that in the semi-arid tropical estuaries, FRic increased with taxonomic richness, as new combinations of functional categories were added to the community, also causing the reduction of FRed. FEve and FDiv decreased with taxonomic wealth, suggesting an increase in the functional overlap of the community. While in typical tropical estuaries, only FRic showed a significant positive relationship, the other functional components were not related to taxonomic richness. Therefore, the components of functional diversity respond in different ways to taxonomic wealth, depending on the intensity of anthropogenic disturbances in each ecosystem. The data generated at the end of the thesis contribute with unprecedented information of great relevance to the scientific community and the managers of environmental agencies in Brazil and worldwide.

The data generated at the end of the thesis contribute with unprecedented information of great relevance to the scientific community and the managers of environmental agencies in Brazil and worldwide.O balanço entre entrada de água doce e a evaporação, pode ser utilizado para classificar os estuários em positivos e inversos. Os estuários positivos possuem salinidade menor a montante (drenagem continental), enquanto os estuários inversos os menores valores de salinidade são encontrados a jusante (próximo ao mar). Apesar de diferirem quanto ao gradiente salino, ambos os estuários são ecossistemas produtivos, biodiversos e dinâmicos, embora as ações antrópicas vêm colocando em risco esse status. Nesse contexto, é fundamental que programas de biomonitoramento adotem métodos que forneçam resultados precisos, rápidos e de baixo custo para avaliar a qualidade ambiental de estuários. Além disso, compreender a relação entre a riqueza taxonômica e a diversidade funcional é fundamental, tendo em vista as modificações que os impactos antrópicos exercem sobre a biodiversidade. Desde modo, o capítulo 1 objetivou testar a eficiência de peneiras com malha de 1mm e a combinação entre as malhas 1 + 0,5 mm em estimar a composição e estrutura da fauna de Polychaeta ao longo do gradiente estuarino durante os períodos chuvoso e seco. Os principais resultados indicam que a inclusão dos dados da malha de 0,5 mm não aumenta o poder estatístico na detecção de diferenças significativas na estruturada da fauna de Polychaeta ao usar a malha de 1 mm ou as malhas combinadas. No entanto, os táxons exclusivos da malha de 0,5 mm podem contribuir com informações essenciais, especialmente quando a avaliação é feita puramente com base na riqueza taxonômica. Portanto, sugerimos que a malha de 1 mm pode ser utilizada em estudos de biomonitoramento de estuários tropicais, desde que a avaliação seja feita com base na combinação entre atributos estruturais e índices de diversidade. O capítulo 2 objetivou avaliar a relação da riqueza taxonômica (S) com a riqueza funcional (FRic), uniformidade funcional (FEve), divergência funcional (FDiv) e redundância funcional (FRed) de Polychaeta em estuários tropicais típico e estuários tropicais semiárido, nordeste do Brasil. Os principais resultados mostram que nos estuários tropicais semiárido a FRic aumentou com a riqueza taxonômica, pois novas combinações de categorias funcionais foram acrescentadas a comunidade, ocasionando também a redução da FRed. A FEve e FDiv reduziram com a riqueza taxonômica, sugerindo o aumento na sobreposição funcional da comunidade. Enquanto nos estuários tropicais típico, apenas a FRic mostrou relação positiva significativa, os demais componentes funcionais não estiveram relacionados com a riqueza taxonômica. Portanto, os componentes da diversidade funcional respondem de diferentes maneiras a riqueza taxonômica, dependendo da intensidade de distúrbios antrópicos ao qual cada ecossistema está submetido. Portanto, os dados gerados ao final da tese contribuem com informações inéditas e de grande relevância para a comunidade científica e os gestores de órgãos ambientais no Brasil e no mundo.Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPqapplication/pdfUniversidade Estadual da ParaíbaPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Ciência e Tecnologia Ambiental - PPGCTAUEPBBRPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPCoastal ecosystemEstuarine macrofaunaEnvironmental qualityENGENHARIASEcossistema costeiroQualidade ambientalMacrofauna estuarinaDiversidade funcionalAtributos taxonômicos e funcionais de Polychaeta como ferramentas ecológicas para o monitoramento de estuários tropicaisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisCeballos, Beatriz Susana Ovruski deBarbosa, José Etham de LucenaAzevêdo, Daniele Jovem Da SilvaMilesi, Silvia VendruscoloMolozzi, JoselineGomes, Wilma Izabelly Ananiasinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessporreponame:Repositório Institucional da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instname:Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instacron:UEPBLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
