Resumo: Introduction: Tuberculosis persists as a serious public health problem in prisons around the world. In the prison environment, the daily life of the patient is marked by insecurities, stigmas, fears and limitations imposed by the situation of incarceration that happens in the middle of a hostile and violent scenario. Therefore, to deal with the disease in this scenario, it is indispensable to know the singularities of patients, the influence of interpersonal relationships and the health needs during the process of coping with tuberculosis.Objective: To understand the experience of the patients deprived of liberty in the process of coping with tuberculosis.Methods: Exploratory descriptive study with a qualitative approach, developed in a male penitentiary complex, located in the municipality of João Pessoa, capital of the State of Paraíba, Brazil, and carried out in October 2017. The census sample included all 16 inmates who were among the fourth and the sixth month of anti-tuberculosis treatment. The data collection in the penitentiary unit was through a recorded audio interview and analyzed through the dialectical hermeneutic approach. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the State University of Paraíba under the number: 52879215.4.0000.5187.Results:To be sick of tuberculosis in prisons dramatically changes the daily life of the patient and the relationship with the peers, the patient tends to be segregated from the social environment due to the stigma and fear that his contacts have to be infected, such situation has a negative influence on the confrontation of the disease and causes great emotional suffering for the patient.Moreover, the diagnosis arouses negative feelings such as sadness, anguish and fear of death, especially due to limitations of the confinement determined by the weaknesses of the physical structure, such as crowded, moist and poorly ventilated cells, nutritional deficiencies and difficulties in accessing health services.On the other hand, suffering is softened by religious belief, the will to live and support of cellmates and health professionals, factors that help the patient to face the treatment. Health information on tuberculosis has been highlighted as a positive aspect in achieving treatment, because when patients and their peers are elucidated about tuberculosis’s stigmas, prejudices are overcome, and the interpersonal relationship is restored.In addition, it was possible to identify that the interaction with health professionals was more related to medication delivery, therefore some patients were satisfied with the care provided, and others were dissatisfied due to the weak bond and the health needs.Conclusion:To assist patients in the confrontation of tuberculosis, a more humane and centralized care of each individual's needs and singularities should be considered.

No ambiente prisional o cotidiano do doente é marcado por inseguranças, estigmas, medos e limitações impostas pela situação de encarceramento que acontece em meio a um cenário hostil e violento. Assim, para lidar com a doença nesses espaços é impresci ndível conhecer as singularidades dos doentes, a influência das relações interpessoais e as necessidades em saúde durante o processo de enfrentamento da tuberculose. Objetivo:Compreender a vivência dos doentes privados de liberdade no processo de enfrentamento da tuberculose.Metodologia: Delineou-se um estudo descritivo exploratório de abordagem qualitativa, desenvolvido em um complexo penitenciário masculino, situado no município de João Pessoa, capital do Estado da Paraíba, Brasil, em outubro de 2017. A amostra censitária incluiu todos os 16 reclusos que estavam entre o quarto e o sexto mês de tratamento antituberculose. Os dados foram coletados na unidade penitenciária por meio de uma entrevista estruturada áudio gravada e analisados por meio da abordagem hermenêutica dialética. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba sob o número: 52879215.4.0000.5187. Resultados: O adoecimento da tuberculose nas prisões altera drasticamente o cotidiano do doente e sua relação com seus pares, o doente tende a ser segregado do seu meio social em decorrência do estigma e do medo que seus contatos têm de serem infectados, tal situação influencia negativamente no enfrentamento da doença e causa grande sofrimento emocional para o doente, além disso, o diagnóstico desperta sentimentos negativos como a tristeza, angústia e medo da morte, especialmente pelas limitações impostas pelo confinamento determinadas pelas fragilidades da estrutura física, como celas lotadas, úmidas e mal ventiladas, carências nutricionais e dificuldades de acesso aos serviços de saúde. Por outro lado, o sofrimento é suavizado pela crença religiosa, vontade de viver e apoio dos companheiros de cela e profissionais de saúde, fatores que auxiliam o doente a enfrentar o tratamento. A informação em saúde sobre a tuberculose foi destacada como aspecto positivo na consecução do tratamento, pois quando os doentes e seus pares são elucidados sobre a tuberculose, estigmas e preconceitos são superados e a relação interpessoal é restituída. Além disto, foi possível identificar que a interação com os profissionais de saúde estava relacionada mais à entrega da medicação, alguns doentes estavam satisfeitos com a assistência prestada e outros insatisfeitos em decorrência do vínculo enfraquecido e das necessidades de saúde. Considerações finais:Para auxiliar os doentes no enfrentamento da tuberculose, um cuidado mais humano e centralizado nas necessidades e singularidades de cada ser deve ser considerada.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfUniversidade Estadual da ParaíbaPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Saúde Pública - PPGSPUEPBBRPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPTuberculosisPublic healthPrisonsSAUDE COLETIVATuberculoseSaúde públicaPrisõesPessoas privadas de liberdadeEnfrentamento da tuberculose pelos doentes privados de liberdadeFocus science technology society and environment for teaching of Biology in Youth and Adult Educationinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisCavalcanti, Sergio d'Avila Lins Bezerrahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/8178780570352971Lacerda, Sheylla Nadjane Batistahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/1565168542921951Figueiredo, Tânia Maria Ribeiro Monteiro dehttp://lattes.cnpq.br/4012484326422419http://lattes.cnpq.br/8976168355998837Silva, Rosiane Davina dainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessporreponame:Repositório Institucional da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instname:Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instacron:UEPBLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
