Faced with the scenario of the incipient intellectual property culture in Brazil, in which it weighs its legislative introduction of more than 20 years, geographical indications (IG), which are seals conferred by process formally established to products whose name is originated by the influence of natural factors typical of a region, or by traditional human intervention and characteristic of a specific locale They have been shown as one of the most protective modalities in recent years. This highlight is not justified by any procedural or bureaucratic ease. On the contrary, the requisition process is presented with the same demands applied to other modalities. Notwithstanding the procedural obstacles that apply to the process of requisitioning a IG, it is identified that these are overlapped by the Association of the seal to the development of the producing region after the certification of the products, which would initially explain this evidence before the other forms of intellectual protection existing. Faced with this scenario, the present work aims to analyze the process of granting the geographical Indication (IG) of the colored cotton of Paraíba, seeking to identify the cultural and historical links in its productive cycle which have served basis to substantiate its concession and establish linking between the production of colored cotton and the intangible cultural heritage of Paraiba, focusing also on the existence of the effects of this concession for regional development of the producer territory. Theoretically, the research is based on the debate on development and the granting of geographical indications, as a methodology the analysis of documents in which the abovementioned process is described, as well as the construction of the speech of the collective subject, which narrates the interpretation of the effects of the effect on regional development and the representativeness of the regional cultural identity in the protected product.
