Resumo: Cotton is one of the world's most important fiber crops grown in more than 60 countries and is responsible for the livelihoods of millions of people around the world, generating employment and income for small and large producers. In Brazil is produced in several regions in different production systems, with production estimated at 1.5 million tons, in which the States of Mato Grosso, Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais are the biggest domestic producers. The objective of this work was to select cotton cultivars tolerant to water stress, based on productivity and fiber quality studies.The experiment was conducted under field conditions, without water supplementation, in a semi - arid environment, in the experimental field of the CENTEC - Technological Institute of the Education Center - Quixeramobim - CE. The planting was carried out on April 24, 2018, germination began on April 30 and flowering on June 18, 2018. Nine cultivars made available by the Embrapa Germplasm Active Bank, previously selected due to fiber quality characteristics and water stress tolerance, were used. The delineation used was in blocks at random with 4 replications, the experimental unit consisted of two rows of 5 m, with manual planting, in 0.90 m spacing between rows with 7 plants per linear meter with net area of 9.0 m2 with 70 plants/plot. The characteristics of cotton seed production, fiber percentage and cotton fiber production, length, resistance, elongation, fiber uniformity, short fiber index, micronaire index and reliability index were evaluated. The data were submitted to the analysis of individual variance and the selection of the genotypes was performed through the selection index proposed by Mulamba and Mock (1978) and by the direct and indirect selection index, through the GENES software. It was verified that there is genetic variability for most of the cultivars tested, indicating that there is possibility of selection gains in breeding programs. Genetic variability was identified for the characteristics of the evaluated fibers, with the exception of the UNF and the SFI, which offers conditions to form new populations with more genetic gains. There is the possibility of genetic gain in the selection process for most of the production characters and quality of the cotton fiber in semiarid conditions. The most promising genotypes are CNPA 2013-2064 RF FL, 944 FM GL, CNPA 2012-120 RF, for presenting satisfactory results for production under rainfed conditions, these being suitable for use in breeding programs aimed at the cultivation of the semiarid region of Brazil.

No Brasil é produzido em diversas regiões em diferentes sistemas de produção, com produção estimada em 1,5 milhões de toneladas, nos quais os estados de Mato Grosso, Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul e Minas Gerais são os maiores produtores nacionais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar cultivares de algodoeiro tolerante ao estresse hídrico, com base em estudos de ca racteres de produtividade e qualidade de fibra. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo sem complementação hídrica, em ambiente semiárido, no campo experimental do CENTEC (Instituto Centro de Ensino Tecnológico) em Quixeramobim- CE, o plantio foi realizado em 24 de abril de 2018, a germinação teve início em 30 de abril e a floração em 18 de junho de 2018. Foram utilizados nove cultivares disponibilizados pelo Banco Ativo de Germoplasma da Embrapa, previamente escolhidos devido as suas características de qualidade de fibra e tolerância ao estresse hídrico. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso, com 4 repetições, a unidade experimental foi constituída por duas fileiras de 5 m, com plantio manual, no espaçamento de 0,90 m entre linhas com sete plantas por metro linear com área útil de 9,0 m com 70 plantas/parcela. Foram avaliadas as características de produtividade do algodão em caroço, porcentagem de fibras e produtividade do algodão em fibras, comprimento da fibra, resistência, alongamento, uniformidade de fibra, índice de fibras curtas, índice de micronaire e índice de fiabilidade. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância individual e a seleção dos genótipos, e o índice de seleção proposto por Mulamba e Mock (1978) através do programa computacional GENES. Constatou-se que há variabilidade genética para a maioria dos genótipos testados, indicando que há possibilidade de ganhos nos programas de seleção. Foi identificada variabilidade genética para as características de fibras avaliadas com exceção de UNF e SFI, o que oferece condições de formar novas populações com mais ganhos genéticos. Há possibilidade de ganho genético no processo seletivo para a maioria dos caracteres de produção e qualidade de fibra do algodoeiro em condições de sequeiro. Os genótipos mais promissores são CNPA 2013 – 2064 RF FL, FM 944 GL, CNPA 2012 – 120 RF, por apresentarem resultados satisfatórios para produção em condições de sequeiro, sendo estes aptos para uso em programas de melhoramento voltados para o cultivo da região semiárido do Brasil.application/pdfUniversidade Estadual da ParaíbaPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Agrárias - PPGCAUEPBBRPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPCIENCIAS AGRARIASGossypium hirsutum LCultivo de algodãoMelhoramento genéticoEstresse hídricoSeleção de genótipos de algodoeiro herbáceo tolerantes ao estresse hídrico para produtividade e qualidade de fibrainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisFarias, Francisco José Correiahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2791182646995434Dutra Filho, João de Andradehttp://lattes.cnpq.br/5364508296916864Cavalcanti, José Jaime Vasconceloshttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2019939703180110http://lattes.cnpq.br/2633883913303231Gomes, Itallo Harlan Reinaldo Alvesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessporreponame:Repositório Institucional da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instname:Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instacron:UEPBLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
