Resumo: The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the news from The Economist (United Kingdom) and The New York Times (United States) related to the theme of the environment, present in the agenda of the international community. The focus is on how such foreign media outline the environmental image of Brazil in the context of the Jair Bolsonaro Government (2019-2022). The successive burnings of the Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal in the country have attracted the attention of the external and foreign media, sensitive to the ongoing climate changes. In this sense, due to its ability to provide visibility and mobilize/influence internal and external public opinion on different subjects, the international media can operate as a “thermometer” (Marcelino, 2013, p. 102) of the public image of a State or government in the face of of a theme – in this case, the environment – informing about the meaning of the ongoing processes in the country (Lafer, 2004) regarding the agenda. Thus, the question that guides the research is: how was the environmental image of Brazil built abroad, in the period from 2019 to 2020, according to the news from foreign media The Economist and The New York Times? To answer the question, the qualitative, exploratory and documentary research is based on the news collected in the referred periodicals, submitted to the similarity analysis by the Iramuteq software and the method adopted is the discourse analysis, by Fairclough (2003, 1995, 1989) to understand the meaning of textual content. It is also a bibliographical research, as it is based on the bibliographic reference (doctrine and documents) of secondary sources of media authors and constructivist approach to international relations. In this sense, discussions about the role of the media as a maker of international public opinion and its discursive power in international relations are woven. Then there is the identification of selected foreign media and qualitative analysis of their reports. Finally, an analysis of the environmental image of Brazil conveyed by selected foreign media portals is carried out under the constructivist perspective, in which the discursive representations of the subjects are compared between the selected press portals in relation to Brazil in terms of the environment. It was concluded that in the period analyzed from 2019 to 2020, under the context of the Bolsonaro government, there was the construction of a discredited environmental image of Brazil, which did not convey confidence abroad, whether for political leaders, governmental and non-governmental organizations , as well as for the international market, concerned about the environment.

O foco recai no modo como tais meios de comunicação estrangeiros delineiam a imagem ambiental do Brasil no contexto do Governo Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022). As sucessivas queimadas da floresta amazônica e do pantanal no país têm atraído as atenções externas e da mídia estrangeira, sensíveis às mudanças climáticas em curso. Nesse sentido, por sua capacidade de conferir visibilidade e mobilizar/influenciar a opinião pública interna e externa para distintos assuntos, a mídia internacional pode operar como “termômetro” (Marcelino, 2013, p. 102) da imagem pública de um Estado ou governo diante de um tema – no caso, do meio ambiente – informando sobre o sentido dos processos em curso no país (Lafer, 2004) quanto à pauta. Assim, a pergunta que norteia a pesquisa é: como a imagem ambiental do Brasil foi construída no exterior, no período de 2019 a 2020, segundo as notícias dos meios de comunicação estrangeiros The Economist e The New York Times? Para responder a pergunta, a pesquisa de caráter qualitativo, exploratório e documental, tem como base as notícias coletadas nos referidos periódicos, submetidas à análise de similitude pelo software Iramuteq e o método adotado é o da análise de discurso, por Fairclough (2003, 1995, 1989) para entender a significação do conteúdo textual. É também uma pesquisa bibliográfica, pois apoia-se no referencial bibliográfico (doutrina e documentos) de fontes secundárias de autores da mídia e abordagem construtivista das relações internacionais. Nesse sentido, discussões sobre o papel da mídia como formadora de opinião pública internacional e seu poder discursivo nas relações internacionais são tecidas. Em seguida, há a identificação dos meios de comunicação estrangeiros selecionados e análise qualitativa de suas reportagens. Por último, é efetuada uma análise da imagem ambiental do Brasil veiculada pelos portais midiáticos estrangeiros selecionados sob a perspectiva construtivista, em que são comparadas as representações discursivas das matérias entre os portais de imprensa selecionados em relação ao Brasil quanto ao meio ambiente. Concluiu-se que no período analisado de 2019 a 2020, sob o contexto do governo Bolsonaro, houve a construção de uma imagem ambiental do Brasil descredibilizada, a qual não transmitiu confiança para o exterior, seja para lideranças políticas, organizações governamentais e não governamentais, bem como para o mercado internacional, preocupados com o meio ambiente.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfUniversidade Estadual da ParaíbaPrograma de Pós-graduação em Relações Internacionais - PPGRIUEPBBRCentro de Ciências Biológicas e Sociais Aplicadas - CCBSAEnvironmental image of BrazilEnvironmentThe New York TimesThe EconomistOUTROSImagem ambiental do BrasilMeio ambienteThe New York TimesThe EconomistA imagem ambiental do brasil no exterior por the economist e the new york times: uma análise de notícias (2019-2020)The Oral History of the Constitution of an Identity of the Master in Teaching Science and Mathematics of the UEPBinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisMelo, Filipe Reishttp://lattes.cnpq.br/4203193403530311Ferreira, Túlio Sérgio Henriqueshttp://lattes.cnpq.br/4902379359282373Nogueira, Silvia Garciahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/1263593714592175https://lattes.cnpq.br/7221440016588022Galdino, Amanda Carolineinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessporreponame:Repositório Institucional da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instname:Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instacron:UEPBORIGINALDS - Amanda Caroline GaldinoDS - Amanda Caroline GaldinoDS - Amanda Caroline Galdinoapplication/pdf992508https://repositorio.uepb.edu.br/bitstreams/ef38586d-e821-4338-857f-fe723a1d554a/downloaddd7f07c337f4530f78ee6433f24afb1cMD56trueAnonymousREADTermo de Cadastramento e AutorizaçãoTermo de Cadastramento e AutorizaçãoTermo de Cadastramento e Autorização da Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD)application/pdf203226https://repositorio.uepb.edu.br/bitstreams/6abe7468-cb0a-4cfa-b42a-b57eccd9d897/downloadadd9898fcd2d42b86c19714238c1a79aMD52falseAdministratorREADLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
