Turkey is a country with a unique geopolitical situation because it is strategically situated within the security dynamics of the various regions in which it operates. In this context, this dissertation aims to study Turkey’s strategic positioning for the Middle East, especially from the emergence of the Islamic State, in order to verify the implications that this event brought to the Turkish performance in Middle East. The hypothesis supported by the research is that Turkey has instrumentalised the emergence of the Islamic State to carry out its agenda in regional security, acting against the Kurds, a combatant group against the Islamic State that the country considers to bring greater regional instability. In order to verify this hypothesis, the research develops as follows; In the first chapter we will address Turkey, bringing a look at the emergence of this country, brief history and regional contextualization as well as an introduction of the Kurds. In a second chapter the Regional Security Complexes Theory will be presented, understanding how this theory is useful for the research object, as well as the Regional Security Complex of the Middle East and its subcomplexes. In this same chapter we see the circumstances that favored the emergence of the Islamic State and its impact on the region. The third chapter will examine the conflict between the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and its implications for Turkey in the light of the Regional Security Complex Theory, as well as the Turkish role in terms of its foreign policy guidelines. The methodology used will be qualitative. A bibliographic review will be done of primary, secondary and tertiary sources. The method will be inductive history.
