Resumo: Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), corn (Zea mays L.) and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) crops are important plant species cultivated in Brazil. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is considered one of the main pests of corn and cotton in several countries in South America, including Brazil. The control of this polyphagous pest is challenging because the possible host plants have different phenologies and are cultivated during different seasons of the year, although close to each other, which can facilitate the movement of this pest between crops. The aim of this research was to study the comparative biology of S. frugiperda with cotton leaves, castor bean, corn and artificial diet. Specimens of S. frugiperda were obtained from the stock rearing of the Embrapa Algodão Entomology Laboratory, kept fed with artificial diet, in a climatized chamber, at 25 °C, 70 ± 10% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 12 hours until the end of the observations. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four treatments and 48 repetitions. Treatments consisted of S. frugiperda larvae fed with (1) an artificial diet, (2) pieces of cotton leaves; (3) pieces of castor bean leaves and (4) pieces of corn leaves. Duration and survival of the egg, larva, pre-pupa, pupa and egg-adult stages and reproductive characteristics were determined. The results obtained in this research indicate that the survival, development and reproduction of S. frugiperda originated created with cotton and castor bean were negatively affected by these diets, but the high number of non-viable eggs deposited by females of this insect originating from populations of caterpillars fed with castor bean leaves is of fundamental importance for its management, which may contribute to reduce population outbreaks of this pest in cotton and corn crops in the main producing regions of Brazil.

A lagarta militar, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) é considerada uma das principais pragas do milho e do algodoeiro em diversos países da América do Sul, incluindo o Brasil. O controle desta praga polífaga é desafiador porque as possíveis plantas hospedeiras têm diferentes fenologias e são cultivadas durante diferentes estações do ano, embora próximas umas das outras, o que pode facilitar o movimento dessa praga entre as lavouras. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi estudar a biologia comparada de S. frugiperda com folhas de algodão, mamona, milho e dieta artificial. Espécimes de S. frugiperda foram obtidos da criação estoque do laboratório de entomologia da Embrapa Algodão, mantidos alimentados com dieta artificial, em câmara climatizada, a 25 °C, 70 ± 10% de umidade relativa e fotoperíodo 12 horas até o término das observações. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e 48 repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de lagartas de S. frugiperda alimentadas com (1) dieta artificial, (2) pedaços de folhas de algodão; (3) pedaços de folhas de mamona e (4) pedaços de folhas de milho. Foram determinadas as durações e as sobrevivências das fases de ovo, larva, pré-pupa, pupa e do período de ovo-adulto e as características reprodutivas. Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa indicam que a sobrevivência, o desenvolvimento e a reprodução de S. frugiperda originadas de populações criadas com folhas de algodão e mamona foram negativamente afetados por essas dietas, mas o número elevado de ovos inviáveis depositados por fêmeas desse inseto originárias de populações de lagartas alimentadas com folhas de mamona é de fundamental importância para seu manejo, o que pode contribuir para desfavorecer os surtos populacionais dessa praga nas lavouras de algodão e milho cultivadas simultaneamente ou em sucessão nas principais regiões produtoras do Brasil.application/pdfUniversidade Estadual da ParaíbaPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Agrárias - PPGCAUEPBBRPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPBionomyGossypium hirsutumRicinus communisZea maysFall armywormCIENCIAS AGRARIASBionomiaGossypium hirsutumRicinus communisZea maysLagarta militarBiologia comparada de spodoptera frugiperda (lepdoptera: noctuidae) com folhas de algodão, mamona, milho e dieta artificialinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisBrito, Carlos Henrique dehttp://lattes.cnpq.br/5238211234586819Farias, Francisco José Correiahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2791182646995434Silva, Carlos Alberto Domingues Dahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/9605692859227718Silva, Carlos Alberto Domingues dahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/9605692859227718http://lattes.cnpq.br/7828379413559731Ramos, Ruth da Silvainfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessporreponame:Repositório Institucional da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instname:Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instacron:UEPBTHUMBNAILDISSERTAÇÃO-RUTH DA SILVA RAMOS.pdf.jpgDISSERTAÇÃO-RUTH DA SILVA RAMOS.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg2898https://repositorio.uepb.edu.br/bitstreams/2c0e396e-76ef-4fb9-9f65-67ec4430b554/download0301fb151fe12f2b6a336cd42ee704fbMD55falseAnonymousREADTermos BDTD - Ruth Da Silva Ramos.pdf.jpgTermos BDTD - Ruth Da Silva Ramos.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg6100https://repositorio.uepb.edu.br/bitstreams/200be840-89ca-421e-9bdd-fdd68204cea6/downloadbcc5e13274528631f239c1c9dff0af46MD56falseAnonymousREAD2999-12-31ORIGINALDISSERTAÇÃO-RUTH DA SILVA RAMOS.pdfDISSERTAÇÃO-RUTH DA SILVA RAMOS.pdfPDF - Ruth da Silva Ramosapplication/pdf575001https://repositorio.uepb.edu.br/bitstreams/5dc33b9d-6f92-45ed-b470-4e1ff6cd5389/download39a18086cb48d0a46bf1bcc9c42343e4MD52trueAnonymousREADTermos BDTD - Ruth Da Silva Ramos.pdfTermos BDTD - Ruth Da Silva Ramos.pdfPDF - Termos de Depósito da BDTDapplication/pdf242841https://repositorio.uepb.edu.br/bitstreams/c8eacf16-67b4-4fc9-973f-c220d7bd10e5/download0c93abe411598a860a9d3bed7c367711MD53falseAnonymousREAD2999-12-31LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
